Hi guys,

I want to build an AC Cobra replica and I’m in my engine choice. I have an opportunity to buy a 1969 rebuild 427 and want to know your pros and cons for that engine. My worries are about the heat that come from the engine to the foot box and the heating of the engine during low speed town tour. What is my tranny choice for that engine? Any more good advice are welcome. I live in Quebec Canada and we normal temperature during summer.
Thanks 😃

First things first: is this a side oiler? If yes, then there is no question, just install it.

IMHO, don't worry about heat. In my experience, driving 100+ miles at a time, it's not all that hot in the footbox. In my case, a coyote with shorty headers and j-pipe immediately in front of the footboxes.

There were no 427s in 1969 so...

Maybe I didn’t understand well the year the guy who sold me the engine is ford car collector and he really know the brand very well.

Grab the casting numbers 130794

Here is an image of my '69 351w Block.

C = Decade designation, 1960’s
9 = 9th year of the decade, 1969
O = vehicle designed for, O = All Fairlanes, 1967-76 Torinos
E = engineering group responsible for the part, E = engine group
6015 = the Ford part number for an engine block
B = 351 Windsor, 2-bolt mains

The date code, which is just below the casting number, breaks down as follows

9 = year of the decade (with we know is 1960’s from the casting number above) = 1969
C = March
28 = day of the month

My Engine was designate for Torinos and Fairlanes.

They had a 428 in 1969. It was the super cobra jet engine.

If it is a 428 from 1969 then that is cool too.

Remember that many 427 Cobras, the street versions, actually had 428 mills in them.

Carroll Shelby's Personal Car (CSX 3178) had a 428 in it too.

390s are often easier to find plus those engines share the same stroke (3.784) as the beloved 427 side oiler engine.

I would prefer to get a 427 based on a 351W block because it is a lot lighter. But, since you already own it I'd install it. Call Mike Forte for clutch etc and a TKO 600 trans.
