View Full Version : How much is full?
For the Coyote crew... this is the expansion tank I am using, a Moroso 63806. Here's an old photo of my tank:

My question: how much coolant should there be in this tank when the engine is cold for it to be considered "full"?

Al, I know it’s not very scientific, but I check the level when the engine is hot. If it can take more, I put more in when it’s cooled down. It would be much easier to just top it off and let the extra get dumped on the street, but that wouldn’t be nice.

As a baseline 25% of container when cold. 80% full at full operating temp.

I check/fill mine when it's cold. Not a fan of opening a hot system. I have the same tank on both of my Coyote builds. Keep them 2-1/2 - 3 inches below the top of the cap. I made a very crude dipstick with marks that I use to check. Basically, fill it up when new, heat cycle it a couple times, top it off to the 2-1/2 - 3 inches, and you're probably done. The system evacuates air by itself. Doesn't hurt to check again occasionally, but I'll bet you'll find it hasn't changed. Great setup.

No matter which expansion tank you use, the method above is the best for evacuation all the air out of your system. You'll get to the happy spot. These are the nice problems to have.
