F 150 Engine
I'm looking for a F150 Gen 2 engine to put in my type 65 and am trying to identify modifications I'll need to make. I tried to find the differences btw the 150 engine and the Mustang Gen 2 and I found:

1. Cam
2. Exhaust manifold (no issue, obviously)
3. Compression ratio (Was thinking forged pistons anyway). Anything else to be dealt with here?
4. Timing Cover.
5. Oil Cooler.

So if these are the only changes I need to make I can save a boatload on a used F150 vs. a Mustang engine.

Does this make sense?

Are there any other suggestions you might have regarding this setup?

Also, I'm planning on mating this to a T56. On the wiki it looks like the T56 rear mount doesn't fit. If that's true, what sort of mods would have to be made?

Thanks!

Assume you're talking about a Gen III Coupe?

Can't comment on the F150 engine, but I feel like I have heard of one or more builders who successfully went this route, so I don't think you'd be alone.

On the T56, do you mean the mount to the engine/bellhousing, or the mount to the frame? Also I assume you mean the newer T56 Magnum (not the original T56)? The T56 Magnum mounts to the Gen III frame very nicely with a simple flip (and maybe a little sanding/grinding) of the mounting plate, and is detailed in a number of build threads.

Not sure if that helps :D

Yes. Talking about the Gen III coupe..

I think the wiki is talking about the mount to the frame (but it specifically cites the t56 and NOT the magnum). I would prefer the magnum. I'll check through the threads and see if I can find more info.

Thanks for your help!

You bet! Assuming the F150 engine doesn't have completely different block or mount dimensions (which I assume it doesn't because it is a Coyote, right?) then I can assure you a T56 Magnum will fit in a Gen III frame without major modifications. All you have to do is flip the orientation of the mounting plate before you bolt it down and reconfigure the shifter handle and plate to the front-most position. Although I will say that I bought my T56 from Mike Forte— so I can't 100% guarantee he didn't do any modifications to it before he sent it to me, but I'm pretty sure he didn't (at least nothing I could notice).

John George's race coupe had an F150 engine in it if I'm not mistaking. Maybe look up his build thread.

As does Erik Treves. Either he, Mark or John will jump in when they see this.

Thx,

I used one in a cobra. I think the only thing I changed was the timing cover. There was one boss different if I remember right. Bolted right in.

The F150 engine block and heads are dimensionally identical to the Mustang engines. Basically a Coyote is a Coyote. They accept the same transmissions, bellhousings, engine mounts, and fit into the chassis the same way. As you’ve already found, they do have a different timing cover,, cams, intake manifold, lower compression ratio (good for boost!), among other things.

John George used several F150 engines in his Gen 3 racecar. At least one suffered an early demise due to lack of oil pressure, but that is a fault of the 2+ G’s of lateral cornering loads (!!) not the engine itself.

Erik Treves’ Coupe has a Coyote engine from a donor 2016 Mustang, and what makes his unique (apart from the twin turbos) is that he also kept the Mustang’s Getrag MT-82 transmission. That transmission takes 3 major modifications to work in a Coupe:

1. Shifter is remotely body-mounted in the Mustang, needs to be trans mounted for the FFR
2. Trans mount, including plate that bolts to the FFR chassis and the rubberized mount bolting to the MT-82 itself
3. Output shaft of the MT-82 is a bolted coupling, not a slip yoke. Will need a custom driveshaft made

There is currently a $5-million class-action lawsuit against Ford for MT-82 problems, which is 9 years in the making. Sounds like most of the issues are from the earliest versions, so the later the year the better they are, but even the latest MT-82D4 in the 2018+ Mustangs isn’t in the same league as the Tremec T56 Magnum. Erik has his MT-82 sorted though, as it’s holding up to the 700ish horsepower in his Coupe :)

I am using a Gen3 Coyote from a 2019 Mustang, with a T56 Magnum, and Quicktime RM-8080 bellhousing in my Gen3 Coupe-R. It’s a perfect fit, and I cannot recommend this combo enough. Although I haven’t driven it yet, just build perspective. The T56 Magnum is the best manual transmission available off the shelf, and for that it isn’t cheap, but you won’t regret choosing it once the car is complete.
