View Full Version : Tire recommendations for 17" FFR Halibrand?
I am getting close to having to order some tires I searched and could only find some threads on tires for 18" wheels. I am looking for a good street tire, decent mileage rating, good traction, etc. Assuming I should just run the size FFR sells, 245/45R17 front, and 315/35R17 on the rear?
Anyone have any recommendations?

The Nitto nt01 is a very good performance tire and the more economical nt05 will give you some reasonable mileage.

I made the mistake of running the Nitto-555 and can spin them at will in the first three gears, 4th too if I push it, and I'm way behind you with only 383 cubes with approximately 450-HP and 460-Torque...I'm also way behind you in rear tire patch with the combo of 245/45-17's (25.6") up front which looks good with my 285/40-17's (26.0") on the rear, but I've gone for a street look since my car more of a cruiser than a bruiser.
SteveHsr's tire choices are far better suited for you since you'll be making even more power with that 427 you'll be sporting...The only thing I'd suggest is running 255/40-17's up front so you get a little bit of rake and a tad more footprint...The 255/40-17 tires are around 25.0" and look good in front of the 315/35-17 which typically are 25.6" tall...Just keep in mind that with 7.0 liters of engine, getting soft compound tires to stick will still be an issue.
Good Luck Fellow Dart Sider!

GoDadGo, will the 255's rub on the F panels? That was my concern going wider in the front and I assume why FFR sells a 245. I would like to see what a car looks like with the 255/40-17s up front and 315/35-17 on the rear.

Lots of guys are running the 255/40-17's up front with the 315/35-17's out back so I'm sure you'll see some pics very soon.
The good news is if they rub the F-Panels, it will only be in a fully locked position.

I can see that I'll need to get another set of wheels and tires to Auto-X.

If the tires rub on the F-Panels use steering rack limiters to eliminate that problem.

I have the NT05's, 255's front (no rubbing) and 315's rear running at 500hp and so far the hook up is really good on the street, yes i can rip them up pretty good if i want to but if I am trying to hook and am careful it works. Haven't had a chance to abuse them on a track yet though.
I personally think round tires work best. :p Sorry, I couldn't help myself. This topic has come up half a dozen times in the last few months and they all go the same way for the most part -- "what I have is the best option".

I also have NT05s on a 500hp car. Another set is going on tomorrow. They are a good all around tire in my opinion. They will work in the rain as long as you have half a brain. I street, autocross and track my car.
You can expect around 10k miles out of them doing mostly street, regular autocross and a few track days. That doesn't sound like much, but it is two years for the average Cobra. Track days will heat cycle them out (harden them up) before you are completely out of tread.
I honesty think that a 200 treadwear tire, is the minimum for a Cobra.
NT01s are even stickier. But they are a track focused tire. Expect about 5000 miles max. I would have a set if I had a 2nd set of wheels.

I have a front one that is more of a D. It's all about knowing how to install it. Here's the secret.......

I've run NT-01s; you'll get one of those 3. They grip like a cart on carpet when it's hot and dry but are definitely dicey when <60 degrees or damp. They are used up by 5,000 miles. I knew that's what I was getting and accepted the trade off. Replaced them with Toyo R888R; they perform the same and have the same pros and cons.

NT-01 are two year tires at normal wear & use for a COBRA in a Southern climate. So put $80 a month in your tire fund. Less if you live up North.

Jeff, will a 255 up front rub on my F panel? What size tires are you putting on your builds with 17" wheels?
And thanks to all who have replied, especially recommending the round tires... got me going in the right direction:D

Fman,
I prefer 255/40 on a 9' rim; most 245/45 are a little stretched and the sidewall doesn't even come out to the wheel lip. At full lock both 255 and 245 will lightly touch the F panel but really it's a non issue---the only time it would come into play would be during low speed extreme parking maneuvers. Normal driving and parking, even parallel parking, won't have you turning that far. If it really concerns you just add an extra rack limiter "horseshoe" to each side.
You asked what they look like with 255/40 and 315/35. Here's mine from back when I was running Kumho XS in those sizes (currently using 275/40 and 315/35).

Being mechanically literate kept me out of the infantry where almost all my basic training company went. Was military school trained as opposed to the OJT system that was common at the time. Made it to senior tracked vehicle recovery mechanic by the time I was discharged.

Wait on your tires. Ultra performance tires age out very quickly.

I agree you might wait on tires until your close to ready to get on the road. However, I found with the 17" ultra performance tires, manufacturers cut out the sizes they offer so you might not be able to find the sizes you need. I lost a track day a couple of years ago because of that. I had to go with 18" to get good track tires for the next event. So, if you are within 6 months of on the road I'd get the tires you like. If have both the NT01 in 255 front and 315 rear 17", and BFG R1S in 18". I now use the NT01 tires for street time. 132745

Well, round tires are only noticeably better at slow speed.

NITTO NT-01 275X40RX17 98Z 315X35ZRX17 102W 100 treadware
Run with common sense as far as weather temperature (40*F) & rain (no sudden inputs) the tires work very well on the street but will wear out quicker than 200 or 300 treadware tires. The fronts can be a bit of arm work if you try to turn them from a dead stop. A little movement or narrower tread will fix that.
