Anyone had issues with balancing weights adhering to the powder coating on the 18" Halibrands? My tire shop used the flat, adhesive type weights and several have ended up on my garage floor. They are stumped.

Haven't had any trouble. Need to make sure the surface is perfectly clean. No brake dust or whatever. The shop that did my Coupe wheels claimed they used high speed adhesive weights, but no way to confirm what that really means. OK so far. Having said that, some especially when tracking will add thin aluminum tape. Have heard of also using instant glue. But that wouldn't be my choice.

They are new wheels so it's surprising. Great tip on the aluminum tape, thanks.

I've been dealing with stick on weights for over 40 years---they didn't stick worth a darn in 1978 and they still don't stick worth a darn in 2020. After balancing, before they ever go on a car I run a strip of HVAC foil tape (like Paul's photo shows) or Gorilla tape across them.

I take a small hammer and tap the weights to conform to the shape of the wheel. Hopefully they cleaned the wheel with some brake or carb cleaner prior to application. Like the tape idea.

When I picked mine up from being mounted I found a strip of weights on the shop floor. He had to put them back on the machine to find and balance the one they came off.
Keep meaning to take them in again. Pretty sure they might be off. Will use the foil next time too, nice tip!

I know I'm kind of paranoid, but I don't trust tire shops to properly clean the wheels. I do it myself before I take them the wheels. I never take the car in and hope they will mount and dismount the wheels properly.

Yep, never trust a professional to know how to do their jobs. Why would a tire shop know how to do tires.

"Professional" means you get paid to do a job. It does't mean that you are actually GOOD at it. I wish it was different.......but it's not.

Ask your professional tire mounting technician what the yellow circles on the tires are for. I'll bet fewer than 50% of them know.

I am getting new tires this Friday. As always, this week I will be removing the wheels, cleaning the barrels, removing the aluminum tape, weights and associated goo, taking the spinner hubs out (they have set screws and are clocked), and removing my nice valve caps. When I get home, I put aluminum tape on and check that they didn't rip a valve stem (which I have had happen before) and reinstall the hubs and valve caps. It is also a good time for a coat of wax.

One thing about taking the car in.......they treat you like a rock star! My local store has me drive into the bay with the big window into the lobby, then stay in the work area to watch.

Wax? What is this that you speak of?

I just take 'em the tires and wheels, not the whole car.

Yep, my guy only gets the rims and tires. OH they sure know all about the small circles and how you balance a performance tire and rim.. An old school full service garage around for many years, family owned and operated.

Hint: Heat the exposed adhesive tape on the back of the weights with a butane lighter, and then install the weights immediately.

The heat will activate the adhesive to improve adhesion. And then use the aluminum tape. Haven't lost any weights in years, and they are tough to get off when the time comes.

That's the good ones to hang onto and give your business to. Not many of those places left.

I had a store manager tell me that the yellow circles where manufacturing marks and had nothing to do with balance. Then he went and looked it up.
