Hi team 818,

What Products and tools have people found particularly good for parts cleaning and rust removal?

Want my alloy to be clean and ready for polishing in some parts and certainly to deal to rust

Cheers.

Try searching for electrolysis, i have read threads on it but it was years ago. Its impressive how well the rust goes away!

Small parts will clean up nicely after a long soak in heated antifreeze. I use an old crock pot for this purpose. Make sure you label everything well and never use the crock pot for food ever again.

I did this and the results are awesome. Just be careful not to use this method if the metal has any chromium in it, it creates some pretty toxic gas that you definitely don't want to be a part of.

Evaporust works well, too.

Heated antifreeze? Seriously never heard of this. So warm up some anti freeze and soak away?

Yes. You can buy an old crock pot at the thrift store for $5-10 and go to town.

It works best on aluminum oxidization/varnish/grease/oil/carbon. Best to test on cast alloy parts as it may darken them.

For steel not so good on rust. I am thinking of trying a heated bath of CLR for that next.

P.S. I learned this trick from my model airplane engine days...

Here is an example of before and after:

Note that this also included some soap and water scrubbing after the crud was loosened up by the antifreeze bath.

Check out this thread for how some of the early builders approached the issue for rusted suspension parts. I media blasted mine, but would try this next time, at least as an initial cleaning.
