View Full Version : Recommended PSI for trunk gas struts??

Currently have 40PSI struts for the trunk lid. Was wondering if anyone is using a lower pressure strut. All I want the struts to do is hold the lid open. Not expecting them to lift it.

I’m using the 20 lbs struts with the factory five hidden setup, they are capable of holding the lid up only if the hinge bolts are tightened enough to provide a little resistance. Without that extra resistance it just doesn’t stay up for long.

Thank You. Might split the difference & try 30lbs struts. 40's a pushing the lid out of alignment & it requires resetting every once in a while.

Yeah, that’s a lot. Let me know how it works with 30s. I’m doing a spare trunk lid that will have a luggage rack on it and hopefully the 30s will do both, as I’ll be swapping them out when necessary.

Previous thread stated F5 uses 28 lb struts on the trunk lid.

Mine is printed with 20 LBS on it:

28 LBS would make more sense, I wonder if they changed that after I received my kit in Dec 2018?

The OP of the thread stated his were 20#s also and the lid would not stay up, F5 confirmed the wt and sent 28s.

Hood struts are 20#.

I had the stock struts on the hidden kit (I think 20#), but due to having a license plate frame with backup lights I needed to upgrade to 25 or 30. I don't recall exactly what mine are, but I went up to the next level.

Well this is good info, so they sent me four 20s instead 2 20s and 2 28s.

Where did you order from? I don't see them on FFR parts page.

JMO but I tried the struts without success. Higher pressure pushed the lid up at the hinges. Tried to adjust but could not eliminate the offset between the rear deck and trunk lid. I even had the trunk latch vibrate open and the lid popped up while driving. Tried a lighter strut and they cured the my original problem but the lid would not stay open. Then I tried one of each pressure and that was better but they only worked when the temperature was warm. Cold days the lid would not stay open. Finally gave up and went with the catch type Trunk Prop Rod from finish line. Works great. Only disadvantage is you need two hands to close the lid.

Amazon. Search went by 30lbs closed 10" extended 17" that I took off my existing struts. A SUSPA pair at 16X9 @ 28 lbs each dropped out. $14.00 for the pair. Be here Wednesday. If I don't like them free returns.

Got a lot of parts from them over the years.

Perfect, that’s what I just found. I might wait and see what you find out. Sounds like from JIMOCO that we might be in a no win situation.

Maybe. With the 40lbs the truck lid worked loose about 3 times over the 5 years. Not a killer problem or hard to fix, but since one strut froze up figured I would take a shot at the 30's & see what happens. Nothing to lose Amazon will take them back.

BTW saw the thing on mixing weights, not a good plan as it introduces a twisting pressure in the lid.

EDIT: On the struts will post if they work or not = FedEx says they will be here Tomorrow.

I think Jeff Kleiner may have a perspective on trunk struts.

The Factory Five version works perfectly and doesn't mess with the trunk lid fit. Other ones not so much...

That explains why mine failed. It was not the FFR strut system.

Don't think there was any FFR package back then. Don't remember seeing one advertised.

I think you are correct. At the time I believe my only option for gas struts was from another vendor.

Original FFR struts for my hood were 28# Suspa C16-02622. They are 17.1” long. I also used on my trunk. I have had to replace both a few times and have always gotten from Amazon, ~$14 for two.

Wonderful - Amazon sent an EMPTY envelope & said the struts were delivered. Nice picture of the envelope on my porch to "prove" delivery. Lots of luck trying to get to a human employee. Had to send email which was not a happy one.

Ordered a replacement set of 17" X 28lbs do not expect to hear from them for 48 hours & want to move on with the work.

LOL - sorry about that ;-) Amazon really seems to be struggling with the increased volume lately. I ordered a replacement set of jack stands from them recently after the HF recall thread. What was delivered was a pack of diapers. :(

Aside from the delay, they did handle it as painlessly as possible, and I had my jack stands a few days later.

Hey! That's mine, I ordered an EMPTY envelope three weeks ago.

Installed the trunk lid struts. Struts hold lid OK @ 28lbs each but think 35lbs would be better.

I would have assumed that going from 40 total to 56 total pounds would make a bigger difference. Anyway, I know that tightening the hinge bolts for some fiction will help. it even makes my incorrectly sized 20s work.

I have found, having to replace them twice, that they do loose some pressure fairly quickly but then work fine holding the trunk open for 4-5 years. 35 psi may well be better.
