View Full Version : Ground wire gauge?

Most of the plugs have ground wires that look like 18-20 guage, but where they join together, and also the runs between grounds, the wire is thicker. I can't tell if it's 14 or 16. I'd like to order just one spool to get this sorted. I know the 14 would be "safer", but I don't want bigger wires than I need. Help?

The same size as he power wire is enough for most items but IF you are combining several ground wires together and then running just one larger ground wire to a ground point, increase it's size as a safety factor: 4 #14's combined into a single #12.
Best way to think this out is, IF everything [connected] was turned on and running, what is the total amperage draw that returns thru the ground. Gauge it accordingly . . .

Poor grounds will cause all kinds of unexplainable gremlins. Just bite the bullet and use a #14 or #12, it won't make that much a difference in the bundle size overall.

I'm replacing the ground circuits on the factory harness. My figgerin is that Subaru already did all the calculations, and if anybody knew the size I should just use that. I'm not the kind of guy to go re-engineer an actual electrical engineer's design choices. I'm taking special care with the ground circuits because I definitely don't want any gremlins. I just don't want a bunch of hacked-together wires responsible for grounding. Most of the other wires just needed to be shortened, so that was nice.
Of course, like I said, it does seem to be smaller than 14 so that's what I'll use if nobody knows for sure.
