View Full Version : Dash harness extra wires?

Hi there all. Let me start by saying buying the complete kit to get the Ron Francis wiring is highly worth it. I can’t imagine the aggravation from having to piece together a mustang harness and deciphering what everything is and make sure it works. I think I have everything mocked up before clean up, but I am not sure if I missed anything. In particular I am wondering about the speedometer. Here is what goes into it.

I have a green speed sensor wire, a black ground, a white dash light, and 1 extra spot.
My question is does my extra gray wire that also is called speed sensor go to the out terminal on the speedo? It shows on the wiring diagram but not in the Ron Francis directions. I am also wondering if one of the clock memory power should be used instead of the gauge feed line like I did?

As far as extra wires here is what I have extra.

I have an oil temp lt blue, a Speedo clock memory red, a gauge feed brown, a speed sensor gray, and another speed clock memory red.

Any advice?

I have the horn, hazards,hi beams, turn signal done.

(Edited to be more succinct)

This all assumes you are using the standard FFR supplied gauges— which it appears like you are from your pictures. The gray speedo return wire is shown connected in the diagram, but unless your engine PCM/ECU requires a speedo input I think you can safely not hook this up. I also don't think it would hurt if you hooked it either— but I left it disconnected on mine.

The clock memory power is also not used as well (assuming standard gauges). My guess is that maybe it's there for the GPS gauges to allow for "hot starts" in the GPS unit, and maybe some speedos have a built-in clock (others would have to chime in). I think if you were to use the clock memory power in place of the gauge feed, you could possibly drain your battery.

Can't comment on the correctness of the pictures, but according to your description of "extra" wires, I think it sounds normal and right. This also assumes that you have at least one brown "gauge feed" wire connected to your gauges— I think they leave an extra one there for any other gauges you might add.

Thank you for your feedback. I have the gauge power feed as you asked about so I think I am good. I did discover that I am going to shift over the smaller gauges to the right since they seem obstructed by the steering wheel. The factory five locations seem great for the big gauges but the small ones are not where I like them. One step forward and then a step back.

On a positive note I just found a junkyard 2015 mustang engine with only 40,000 miles on it that is being delivered to my home today. I went to inspect it yesterday and it looks good and is in my budget. Very exciting.

Thank you again.

Make sure to keep the gauge feed alive in case you want to power up something later on. I.e. a back up camera system.
