View Full Version : door weather strip
How have builders been weather stripping the front portion of the top of the door (the forward few inches that is lower than the rest of the door top)? 129494

IMO, that is by far the worst change from Gen I to Gen II. The Gen I doors were pretty straight-forward as far as sealing the door to the body. On the Gen II doors, there's just not a whole lot you can do there that's going to look decent or seal well.
My thought is to make the hole smaller and then cover it with a piece of rubber with a slit for the window to pass. Or maybe use two pieces of weatherstrip forming a V.

Dang Shane that was not really good news on the Gen II doors. Have not started mine yet, guess will have to see what I can come up with.

Yeah...that whole area at the front of the door is.....unfortunate. You have the window coming up thru there, the regulator clamp sometimes hits there so the whole area needs to be trimmed out (like in the photo posted in the OP), sometimes the triangle on the body hits that area of the door, so you either have to move the triangle up or trim the door out....and even after you do all of that, there's not really any elegant way to seal that area up or make it look nice when done. You have the top of the door sliding underneath the triangle of the body.....it's just a difficult area to deal with. I'll take Gen I doors over Gen II doors every day of the week.

I haven't seen a Gen-II in person, so I'm just working from the pictures posted, but what about moving the triangle to the door and then building a seal for it against the pillar?

Would that area be amenable to some kind of a 3D printed filler piece?
It needs to be flexible, so some type of weatherstrip. I've seen some oem where they have a large triangular shaped piece. Probably requires a trip to the salvage yard. For now I've cut out a piece from garage door weather strip but it's not a long term solution. 129768

James: I just finished my doors. I bought extra window channel and weather stripping for the aft door post. If you're interested you're welcome to it. It's a 24" piece of channel that you cut in two (one for each door), cut slits to bend to match the window and bond to the door with 8115. 129769
