I’d like to go around the table and ask what everyone thinks the best way to add power steering to a 93 mustang donor car (cobra already built and running).

Electric power steering option? Electric with hydraulic bolt-on option?

I’m not interested in adding an old school power steering pump. The car drives fine without it... but a little help would be nice.

Thanks Y’all.

I guess mine is old school. I have the FFR power rack, a Ford pump, a Moroso tank, and Breeze parts. My suggestion is to ask Mark Reynolds for his opinion.

Fast Freddie's electric PS pump works really well and assist level is easily adjusted. It's on the expensive side but is a high quality piece. But I just went to the website and it is down.

Check out Epowersteering.com (https://epowersteering.com/purchase/product/factory-five-mk3-4-roadster-kit). I went this route and have been happy with it.

Got a photo of your install?

I went with EPS also. Easy install, no engine driven pump, no hoses, no fluid, works with the stock FFR rack and if you are a Horse Power junkie, there is no power drain running a pump. I had an intermittent problem after install and their tech guy (and owner) jumped right in and put me straight. Problem was a poor connection at the "4 wire" junction which was easily addressed. They even called me back to check on the fix!

He's says this is for a Mustang, not the cobra?

Here you go...129461 129462 129463

When I did mine, I built my own bracket: 129464

Good luck!

After installation of the power steering kit, did you make any changes to front end alignment or add caster? Was there any improvement in the handling? I ask this because I find my car to be very twitchy at speeds in excess of 80 mph and thought that the added caster may reduce that situation. I have a MK4 with the stock rack.

I also installed the eps system and have been very happy with it.129468

JIMOCO: I have not made changes to the alignment (yet), but it could use more caster to reduce twitchiness at speed!

there is no power drain running a pump.

But where does the electricity come from? The belt driven alternator. The more power it has to produce, the harder it is to turn, and the engine has to turn it.
It might be more efficient, but electric power steering and water pumps still take HP.

Thanks Frankb. I thought adding caster would likely be the fix. I will give the PS system some serious thought.

Beyond reducing effort, being able to ad caster is, I think, the biggest benefit of PS.

Anyone know how to contact Fast Freddie. His website is down. I really am in need of an electric/hydraulic PS solution.

'sales@fastfreddiesfabrications.com' worked as of a few weeks ago. Website's been down for sometime now. Kinda ominous...

If nothing else you could source the parts individually. The part number for the MR2 power steering pump is 44310-17011, and the mounting bracket could be made relatively easily from a flat piece of aluminum plate. Other than that, just need a reservoir, a high-amp relay and fuse, and assorted fittings, hoses, and 8 gauge wire. I'd be happy to get the part numbers off the electrical components if you'd like.

Good luck,

-Karl

If u must source yourself then use the Toyota mrs spyder version of the pump. Includes a reservoir and a guy on eBay sells a mounting bracket for an easy install. Works great.

My MKIV is on order. For those using the ePowerSteering kit, does it come with the steering shaft make-up pieces? Or, do you have to cut one of the steering shafts that come with the roadster kit? Sorry for the newbie question.

Thanks,

The steering shaft has to be cut to add the adapters. When the adapters are welded in, be sure that the U-joints are kept "in phase"!
