View Full Version : Finishing outside corner of carpet

I've seen some photos of (looks like) black tape covering the outside corner of the door sill and body side wall (next to the seats). I haven't found any tapes that look like they'd work, but then again, I may be looking in the wrong places!

How have you covered that edge on the door sill? Any good ideas to give that edge a more finished look? Thanks in advance!

Could any of these be viable solutions?

Al,

I think you are looking for a carpet edge binding, not tape. I think pretty much any carpet shop can add it to the edges.

https://bowenfoamfabric.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=1_7

I went for a more durable solution that I like, but may not be what most consider finished.

That edge will get a lot of traffic getting in and out of the car. Another option would be to cut the carpet in a way that doesn't have a seam there at all, but it would get pretty complex to do that.

Steve and Dave,

Close.... I like the concept of the black strips in Steve's links, but one edge is kinda short. I like Dave's approach, but I wasn't thinking metal. Then again I could paint the metal...

Good start! More ideas, please!

If so it was on your car when it left here (same way it was on Dave's---thanks for letting me swipe your photo ;)). Did you remove them when you installed the under door carpet? If that's what you're talking about and find the trim pieces make sure that when you put them on the barb is to the inside.

If you're talking about something else nevermind :p

I used a vinyl type material (can't find were I purchased it from so not sure exactly what the material is) and sewed it on. Is this what you're looking for? It's 1 1/4" wide and has a cloth backing.
I have approx 10' extra if you want it.

PS: Please excuse the dirty carpet, I drive mine more than I clean it.

Hi, Jeff. Quick question on that C-channel, since I haven't installed it yet. Does the inside edge go *over* the carpet, or should I cut the carpet away for that edge?

Thanks,
- m

X2 on having an interior shop sew on carpet binding. Durable, looks good, and not super expensive. I had a number of pieces done and I think he charged me $75. Maybe on the high side even. The first picture shows where I had it sewed on the sill piece. Once installed, all the exposed raw edges are finished including by the door hinge and latch. Second picture is the finished product. In the background you can see also where I had it added on the piece on the transmission tunnel. The outside metal edge is the piece from Dark Water Custom replacing the Factory Five plastic strip. Don't know if those are still available or not.

They do still offer the door edge trim. I have a set that I haven't installed. They make them in batches, so if you want a set, you need to call them and they will let you know when they plan to produce the next batch.

The method I used on a MK4 was to take black vinyl cloth that matched the seat material; sewed it to the carpet edge and then bent it around and glued it to the underside of the carpeting. I did the other exposed edges of the carpet along the tunnel as well. Not just the door sills. It has held up well for 4 years and cost almost nothing.129386

Something a s simple as falling off a drunk horse becomes a problem. I have no idea where or why you need carpet edging? But that just me. :) On mine, the carpet is folded over the door sill, and is tucked under the finished body, then the trim piece Jeff points out is snapped on the edge of the body. The edge of the carpet is under the body and the trim, can't even be seen.
Jeff, a new body shaping request, trim the door lip on the body to a consistent width so the trim fits better. Trimming that lip after it was all finished and painted, was as much fun as it sounds.:p

Jeff, No. I'm talking about the edge where Dave has the aluminum piece.

Lots of good ideas here! The only challenge with the sewn on pieces is that I already glued the door sill pieces in place! I wonder if a piece like Dave's is available in plastic. I'm pretty sure it is - just need to find it. OK, starting search!

That's one of the differences between a Mk3 and Mk4. The Mk3 sill carpet folded over as you said. No raw edge showing. For the Mk4, they changed the design. The sill carpet piece is now separate and left stock, the raw edge of the carpet is left exposed on top of the sill. The sill aluminum piece itself is also different, and extends further up to the door hinge in the front and the latch in the back. So a separate piece of carpet to fit it.

Ahhh yes, mine is a Mk3. That looks like a step back.

That's a sexy machine. I got to enjoy this one a couple of summers ago at Lake of the Ozarks:

I've never had the desire to own a boat, but I certainly enjoy them.

Here's an update, just getting around to posting a couple of photos. David sent me the extra tape he had. I liked it, but the carpet was already glued in place so it wasn't going to work. What I ended up with is a different take on Papa's solution. I took a door edge guard - the kind you use on drywall, and shaped it the same way Dave did. The plastic is clear, so I sprayed the inside of the plastic pieces with black paint. They're riveted in place. I may yet put a dab of black paint on the rivets, but it doesn't look bad as it is.

I make that out of one piece, I stick the side on, then the flat, it folds over and stretches so there is no seam.
