I was driving tonight and came up behind some jack wagon pulling a loaded trailer with a tire blown out. He was dragging it, wheel totally ruined, and kicking up sparks and all kinds of crap behind him from the side of the road.

I moved to go wide around him, and unfortunately the sun was setting right in my eyes. As such, I didn't see the soft spot in the road that had formed and pushed up a ridge of asphalt right on the center line until the last second. A solid "bang" and a scattering of asphalt out behind the car were followed by a few choice words for the idiot dragging the trailer.

I got home and put it on the lift, and it looks like the frame took the impact with just surface damage; luckily the asphault wasn't too hard. Oil pan was good to go and didn't take any impact at all. Everything else checked out. I'll clean up and shoot the frame with some black enamel.

Luckily I ended up hitting it dead center so it didn't upset the disposition of the car at all. Speed was below 50 mph. The asphalt ridge ended up being about 1" too tall for the roadster to straddle. Luckily the cross frame tube bulldozed it without much effort and only some scratches to show for the trouble. The very bottom lip of the plate that closes up the gap between bell housing and transmission had some minor scuffing as well, but the ridge had already been pretty much cut down to size and it didn't take much of a hit.

I kept watching oil pressure the few miles it took to get home. I breathed a sigh of relief when I looked at the bottom of the car.

Gordon put the right pan on this motor, as it tucks up just above the bottom of the frame tubes even with dropped solid motor mounts.

Ouch! That really sucks but truly shows that indeed the oil pan too low is asking for trouble. You just don’t know when, if ever, you may clip something like you happen to do. Sorry to see the damage but fixable thankfully.

I find that Rustoleum Appliance Epoxy black in a rattle can is a good match for the FFR powder coat.

The Texas speed bump. Luckily we don't have many of those around here. They're more of a north Texas and Hill country issue.
