I recently (and accidentally) discovered that a chair I've had in storage for almost 30 years is worth upwards of $2,000. What's even more of incredible is that the chair is from IKEA! It's called SKYE and it was designed by some famous designer named Tord Björklund and apparently, not a lot of them were made.

I've decided to use the chair but it needs a gentle cleaning. I haven't the foggiest idea what type of leather the chair is made of. It's positively not the "shiny" leather like on a roadster seat, and it's not soft, somewhat fuzzy suede leather like on shoes or the elbows of a literary professor's jacket.

It's quite soft to the touch and has a matte finish. That's all I can say to describe it.

I found something online that said the chair was made of "cognac leather" but it's a different color - light brown - and I'm not sure if "cognac" refers to the color or leather type.

Any idea what mine is and how to clean it? I could not find any YouTube videos regarding this type of leather.

All I'll say is DONT CLEAN IT! :D Or if you try, do it on a very hidden area first!

I've taken advice before and used a safe cleaner on a leather chair.. and it immediately stripped some coating off and left a horrible peeling mess.

Leave it to a professional, IMO..

The good news is the top "pillow" part folds over, so underneath can be a hidden area. This type of leather does not seem to be painted, so I don't think there is anything to flake off. Seems to be dyed. I could be wrong, of course.

Yeah, on mine it was an invisible clear lacquer or something. I'm now terrified of leather furniture :D

My "go to" for leather is Lexol cleaner followed by Lexol conditioner. It's very gentle, and I like that the conditioner doesn't leave a very shiny "Armor-All" finish on the leather. But yes, do definitely test it on a hidden area first.

Eddie,

All manufacturers are required to place a material tag on the item somewhere - it's usually somewhere hidden - think of your bed pillows and the tags on them. If you can find it, it may give you some info as to what the material is and cleaning instructions.
