I've got the Whitby's SS windshield inserts to replace the brass ones in the windshield. Thought I'd be proactive as so many have used them. Looking at the brass inserts, what's the best way to tap these out of the windshield frame and install the new ones? Lightly tapping a flat head screwdriver on the end of the insert until it comes loose comes to mind, but my frame is powdercoated, so wanted to be sure this was the best way.

Of all the windshields I've put together and installed I have never had one strip so haven't changed one (watch, I've just cursed myself). If I was going to though I think I'd run one of the screws into the lowest hole a couple of threads...but not so far that it contacts the frame... and then put the blade of a small punch or screwdriver into the "L" created at the intersection of the screw and insert and tap from there. The inserts are wedge shaped so once you start it moving downward in the channel I'd think it will move pretty easily.

Remember to use the "new" screws that come with the Whitby's nut plates, they are 10-32. Brass strips are 10-24!!

Jeff's recommendation worked like a champ. Got one side out. Looks like my frame was a little closed in on the end, so separated a little when the brass strip first started to come out and broke my corner brass L bracket. I'll be ordering a couple of those for spares. I wish SS was used on all of this instead of brass, as its so soft and delicate.

It may be soft and delicate but that is what makes it sooooo British. Never mind that they’re made in Taiwan ;)
