Harbor Freight has recalled some of their jack stands.
These are the ones I have, so I'm glad I didnt have an issue. I'm going to return them.
Everyone be careful!

That’s terrible! Kind of like saying, oops, our fire extinguisher might actually start fires.

Thanks very much for posting. Turns out I have these and would not have known otherwise! Good timing since the car comes off the jack stands for the summer this weekend.

Thanks for the heads up. Looks like I have an unscheduled trip to harbor freight in the near future. Just as soon as I make a stand for my 818 :(

Note that this recall is due to the "pawl" extension disengaging when rocked. I think I have these jacks but have them bottomed out so not too concerned.

Thanks, Jdav. Those are the ones I use so I'll definitely swap them out.

Please don't buy jack stands that do not have a lock pin. They are known as "Double locking".

I also tend to stick to name brands where my life is involved. Not that they don't have recalls. But tend to be better.

I have a few sets that are the same design but I dont think they are from HF. I may need to look closely at mine.

About 2 weeks ago I took the roller off of the cart to put the wheels on to take it to our new house and put it on 4 of the 6 ton stands. I had it on the first height setting, the car was on level ground. The car was sitting for about 5 min. I was talking to a friend about 10 feet from the car and for no reason the drivers rear failed the car was only tilting on two stands I ran over and jacked it back up. At the time I assumed I did not lock it right. But after seeing the recall and inspecting them closer you can see how bad the casting is. I swaped them out with dbl locking pin type.

Echo the double locking thing. 2 of the recalled ones have held up my 818 for years now, scary. Thanks for posting for more to see; tell your friends too!

Thanks for posting this. I get Harbor Freight emails, but nothing was mentioned about the recall. I did find their recall notice online, and the 6 that I have are nowhere the affectd numbers. Still a little paranoid though-

Yikes! How many hours did I spend under my build on those stands? Never had a problem but sobering thoughts.

I have Torin branded stands. Note in the picture there is a safety lock that keeps them in position. No problems yet...

This is scary as hell! I have a set of Craftsman-branded stands that look identical to the recalled ones. Even though they're not recalled (or even the same brand), they don't have any sort of secondary locking feature. I didn't even know there was such a thing, but now that I do I'll likely replace mine with a set of stands that have this feature for peace of mind.

I just returned my set of four to Harbor Freight yesterday. Now I'm glad they were out of stock on the replacements. Wasn't aware of the stands with the secondary lock, but found out here, and ordered the Torin set that Ken listed. A bit more expensive, but like Steve said, when I think about how much time, and what I have worked on under this car, even just a week or so ago, I'm glad I stayed lucky, and didn't have a problem. Just have to use the credit for something else.

Thanks for this thread. I don't have those stands, but when I think about how easy it might be to bump and handle on one of these things I get chills. Definitely getting a set of the locking ones.

Maybe it's the rock climber in me, but I always back up my jack stands with solid wood cribbing. Single points of failure = no bueno.

Usually I use sections of landscaping timber under the frame.

Warning!
Check your welds on the replacements. I bought double lock stands and one set had good welds, but the other had bad welds AND No Welds!

Big Red 2 Ton stands are to have welds at the base, but one set was never welded. Only tacked. I showed my wife that you could break that piece of with pliers, and did! Be careful!
