I’ve seen some that are just pop riveted on and I assume the others, the body shop can blend them in. How are most folks doing them?

The plastic scoops can not be molded in. You can put them on with rivets. I put them on with #8-32 x5/8 stainless button heads. To do a molded in you need a fiberglass scoop...da Bat

The originals were riveted on, but as per Da Bat I fastened mine with s/s button head machine screws with dome nuts underneath. Mine is a wheeled aluminium scoop from **********.

The problem w/ rivets is they will usually pull too tight and mess up the paint and or plastic. The button head machine screws allow one person to hold the screw, so it doesn't turn and damage the paint, while another tightens the nut.

I had the same question, my personal preference was molded and when I considered the fact that the racing and s/c cars were the ones with riveted scoops and the street 427s didn’t have scoops at all, or roll bars for that matter, it made think about how does a molded scoop, chrome side pipes and roll bar fit in to the mix in 1965? I was going for a street 427, as it would have over riders and hoop bumpers. Then it hit me that the street cars were moded by the original owners and the dealerships with these things, so no problem justifying a street 427 having a molded scoop. It all depends on what you are going for and as a lot of builders don’t care about period correct looks you’ll tend to find everything under the sun. I’ll add too, though that most of the FFR roadsters I’ve seen have the rivet look.

Very hard to tell rivet heads from SS Button Heads

Followed the BATS instructions & used #8-32x5/8 stainless button heads with closed Acorn nuts from Home Depot.

Mk3 and earlier had molded scoops (that were crooked!) and some guys wanted those cut off and a loose scoop installed. I've done that.
Some Mk4 guys want a molded scoop. I've done that too BUT like my pal Miller said only with a 'glass scoop. Going either way makes for a bunch of extra work and before the question is asked, no, the hoods are not interchangeable. Early Mk4s came with fiberglass scoops that were unfinished on the underside (and in keeping with the tradition of the crooked molded in ones they were not symmetrical side to side) so try to find one of those if you plan to mold it into the hood. The ABS ones are much better to deal with as long as you're going for the rivet/bolt on look.

Bear,
How are those fastened? Is there a nut plate in the hood, a nut under the hood or did you just thread them into the fiberglass? Thanks and those look really nice.

The holes are drilled completely through to the inside. The Acorn nuts with washers are snugged up tight but not excessively so. Got the button heads & acorn nuts in stainless steel from the specialty fastener cabinet at Home Depot. McMaster also has them on mail order.
