My car is wired up using the stock harness....no diet. It is a real mess of wires and I really want to tidy it up. Yes, I could do it myself and that is one route I am considering. The other way (other than starting from scratch with a generic harness kit) it to use Wayne's harness. It seems to use an aftermarket ECU (Electromotive or MegaSquirt) so would there be any issues with "tuning" it later? I have not asked Wayne about it yet, but thought it would be good to know if anyone here is using it and what they think of it.

thank you,

Rick

edit: I've done some homework with the search function and it seems that those using this harness are very impressed with it.........I may go this route.

I am using Wayne’s harness and a Haltech Elite 1500. It works great, I made my own crank sensor Hall Effect and a ran shielded crank cam sensor harness using the 8vdc Haltech dedicated circuit. More consistent, not impressed with a variable voltage reluctor that starts at .2 vdc and climbs up with rpm.

If you do decide to take on the job of cleaning up your harness yourself, I have extensive notes from where I cut down a 2006 Turbo to just the ECU and then used an aftermarket harness for the chassis. I can send you my cable schedule and notes and it should save you a ton of time.

I kept the stock ECU mainly because I wanted cruise control, and also because if I sell the car, I didn't want there to be issues with other states registration process if it didn't have the stock ODBII emissions codes. I see you are in Ontario, and some of our Canadian members have had hell getting registered, so make sure you determine if you can use an aftermarket ECU and still pass before you go down that path. If you can, I would ditch the stock ECU (and immobilizer) and go with an aftermarket one. If you don't go with Wayne's kit, I have quite a bit of research on alternative ECUs for the 2006 Turbo and I can give you the summary I wound up with.

I went with Haltech, it does cruise has some not sure if all codes but most important to me was Drive by Wire and getting rid of the MAF. The ECU is nice and I love the flexibility the Software gives me. Plus traction control and will blip (rev matching) the throttle during downshifting for us not so coordinated.

I’ll have to look into that Haltech, seems like it has a lot of good features. So you can keep the drive-by-wire? Is getting rid of the MAF a good thing? I don’t know enough about that.

I have used the VCP harness with very good results.

swapping MAF for speed density is a plus. It's not really required at stock power levels, but becomes a requirement at some point. The MAF sensors can be finicky at at any level.

I was an early pioneer who had to diet the donor harnesses (06 WRX) because there was no other choice at the time. It worked well with lots of OE stuff like OBDII, cruise, ABS, etc. but it was months of work and tests of patience. What Ajzride suggests about using the donor ECU and an aftermarket harness makes lots of sense to me, if you don't go the VCP route.

I have Waynes harness with MS3 Pro. I went to his after dieting wire for about a month.

I just started the harness dieting project. I like your approach of the separate engine harness. If you're still willing to share your cable schedule and notes it would be greatly appreciated. Please PM me.

Check out Mechie3’s posts showing every connector, what each is attached to and whether he would keep it.
