View Full Version : Sniper EFI wiring questions

I'm finishing up the wiring for my Sniper and things are pretty straightforward, but I have some questions about it:

1. I'm running a lead from the orange EFI/Coil wire to the coil (+) post. There is a tag on the coil that says to be sure to connect a 12V accessory power wire to the coil. Is that taken care of with the lead from the orange wire?

2. From the Sniper 10 pin connector, I'm running the light blue wire to either of the RF green fan thermo switch wires. Where is a good place to make this connection?

3. My plan is to run the blue wire back to the fuel pump and then put the inertia switch on the ground side of the fuel pump in the trunk. Does the inertia switch ever go off in normal driving? I don't want to put it back there if it goes off frequently and I have to stop and open the trunk to deal with it all the time. On the other hand if it rarely or never goes off, I think it can live back there ok.

4. There is an "ignition coil driver" included with the Sniper kit. Its a small rectangular box with a grey wire coming out of the right side and black, white and pink wires coming out of the left side. Is that used? I've never seen the driver discussed in wiring posts before.

Thanks! Carl

Are you running a CD box for ignition?

The orange efi / coil wire does not go to the coil on sniper install. This will be the “ignition source” to the sniper. There is lots of diagrams and choices for coils and ignition timing on the Holley site. They also have lots of videos that are helpful. I am using their whole hyper spark distributor, cd box and coil. If you are doing that, I have a wiring detail that shows how I hooked up all the wires including the inertia switch.

We really need more details to help out.

If you are using a standard coil and distributor, any switched +12v source can be run to the coil. The choke wire or efi coil wire are typical choices. The green fan thermo control wires are accessible in two locations in the RF harness. One is in the sending unit bundle and the second is with the fan wires in the front harness. Running the Sniper fuel pump control wire all the way to the pump is an option if you prefer. There is no issue doing it that way, just a bit of work on your part.

Have you downloaded the 70+ page instruction manual from Holley? Considerably more information the the 16 page instructions manual that comes with the unit. As stated earlier more information on your part would be helpful.

I have the same question about the "ignition coil driver" that came in the Sniper EFI kit supplied with my Blueprint 347 engine. I don't see any mention of it in the instructions, and I haven't found any discussion of it in the forum. I would be interested to know if others have used it.

Not used on my install. I have a standard HEI distributor and coil ignition setup. I connected the yellow Sniper wire to the coil (-) post, and nothing else ignition related. I used the Coil(+) post to run the RF harness tach wire.

The coil driver is used if you are using the Sniper to control timing and not using an ignition box. One example of its use is on page 29 of the downloaded manual. I use it to drive the coil with my Hyperspark distributor. Read some pretty bad reviews of the Hyperspark ignition box and decided to go with the coil driver for now.

If you take a look at the full installation manual that is some 76 pages long (not the quick start), the Timing Control Ignition system wiring section shows when the module is needed. There's also some explanation in the Holley Sniper forum if you google it.

Not quite. If you're using a Ready-to-Run type distributor, you don't need any of the CD boxes or Coil Driver. The coil driver or CD box is needed when you use either the Hyperspark distributor or Dual-Sync distributor (my choice) to power the spark. The Holley distributors mentioned do not provide a driver without the need of the CD box or Coil Driver.
