Sorry to burn up the forum with all my questions, but it's hard waiting for the car to come, lol :)

I've seen many of you have used a Boyd's gas tank. They look sharp, but I'm wondering why the upgrade?!? Is it more functional, better spacing to make it fit, or just stainless? Are there problems with the stock tank from FFR that cause issues with other mods?

Just curious...

Roger

I think the main season (correct me if I'm wrong) was the very first version of the tank had problems filling as the fill hose was connected to the middle of the tank, not to the top of the tank. There were also problems with poor welds that caused leaks.
I have the version 2 tank that fills from the top. No leaks.

Jim is correct. The new FFR tank is fine.

I also read a lot of posts while I was waiting for my kit! There is so much to learn here! I have a Gen 2 that I received late December 2019 and hope to finish this month. I talked with the folks at FFR and they assured me that the fuel tank problems had been corrected in the Gen 2. Just to confirm I installed the sender and cap in my tank and filled prior to installation and let it sit for a week or so while I was busy doing other portions of the build. No leaks after 3 months and fills easily. Cheers Ray

I used Permatex Permashield 85420 on the gaskets, it's made for use with gas and oil, it doesn't harden.

Roger,
I hasten to encourage you to be careful about reading too far back. A lot of the old posts are about GEN one cars and do not apply. Particularly with regard to the gas tank, the exhaust, the need to insulate the floors, and the doors. There’s just too many changes there for their advice to be pertinent.

Good advice, and I appreciate all the comments.

Good point Sethmark! It could create a lot of confusion. Also the paper copy of the assembly manual that I received had many directions that did not apply to the Gen2. I finally just used the paper manual as a guide along with the PDF one which was the most accurate for me. The body portion was really the most confusing. Particularly the door and deluxe hood hinge installation instructions. The mechanical part of the build was a breeze compared to the body build. LOL Ray

At the same time, this forum becomes slightly useless without warnings of gen 1, gen 2, mk 1,2,3,4, old manual, new manual, so anyone trying to glean good advice from fellow comrads can only ask questions. I just appreciate the theme of the forum where all who want to help chime in and give great assistance. Looking forward to moving from the computer in the office to the build in the shop!! Cheers!

Agree with the comments on Boyd vs FFR tanks - the one other Flexibility the Boyd tank provides is location of the filler. The Boyd tank uses a hose to its inlet so you can locate the filler outside the trunk if you want.

That is a great point! I have actually updated my signature to reflect Gen 1 just for this purpose.
