As I mocked up the position of my seats I decided that a removable steering wheel would make this car much easier to get in and out of. I had an adjustable track for the driver side, but did not like the height it raised the seat to. Scrapped that and mounted directly to the floor with a half inch riser under each seat. Height was perfect but steering wheel was a bit in the way...hmm what to do. I visited other builds and found out that the factory five hub doesn’t like to work cooperatively with many aftermarket removable hubs due to the bolt pattern.

I fished around and found this great removable hub from speedway motors that features a splined gear that fits on the 3/4 inch shaft and allows the hub to come on and off with a locking pin. 127962

It doesn’t easily match up with the factory five hub so I cut that apart and brazed it to the cut off factory five steering hub.

I drilled out the steering wheel holes to enlarge them to5/16 18 and drilled and tapped the factory five hub to accept the larger bolts. I need to find some recessed ones, but for now all I could find were pan head style. Any ideas where to find these?
It works even with the wheel center cap, but sticks up some since the bolts are pan head.

Now I am getting ready to center the wheel and weld the gear to the steering shaft. So far it looks good. I am going to sit on things for a bit before I commit with the welder. Seem ok? Am I missing anything?

Lowes? I found some just like that. It's my goto bolt shop.. even has grade 8 when needed. I'm there all the time anyway, so it's handy

Certainly try local hardware stores 1st but McMaster-Carr has pretty much everything...

Amazon also has a pretty good selection but sometimes harder to find:
