View Full Version : Pic request - Wilwood pedal box/hydraulic clutch set up. Upgrading from Mustang setup

Hi - I'm looking to upgrade my brake setup but not sure what's the best way to go.

Current set up -
87-93 Mustang pedal box
93 Cobra brake booster
93 Cobra Master cylinder
Russ Thompson gas pedal
Gordon Levy Wilwood big brake calipers
Prop valve in rear brake lines

I have Mike Fortes hydraulic clutch setup that I want to install

Goals -
Install the hydraulic clutch setup.
Convert brakes from power to manual per Gordon's recommendation

Looking for the best option to make this work - cost not a huge factor. Body will be coming off as I need to make wiring modifications as well.

Other factors - there are a lot of wires running through the pedal box location - the fuse box is located in the factory location in the drivers footwell.

Pics seem to work better for me to figure out what to do - I would appreciate any pics with a Wilwood pedal box setup with hydraulic clutch.

Is there a kit that I can get from F5 that will have all the parts I need? I have a call into them but have yet to hear back.

TIA

I just built my pedal box with Wilwood master cylinder for a hydraulic clutch. I have not hooked up any lines yet but from what I can tell it is a much more simple setup when running hydraulic vs. cable system. Not sure if this is what your looking for but here is a pic of my pedal box.

If you need some other angles let me know and I can take a few more pics on Saturday.

FYI wilwood sells an adapter that let you use an couplings and proper lines from the reservoir instead of the Push on plastic cap with hose barb.

Out of curiosity what are you trying to achieve by making this swap? With your setup I would almost say ditch the big brakes and go back to stock, keep the current pedal box, booster and MC. Afternoons worth of work. That is unless you prefer the manual feel or there is something else you’re trying to achieve with this?

Not sure exactly what you are looking for. Fortes Parts sells a kit and can probably set you up with everything you need.

I built my own kit based on a kit sold by DazeCars https://www.dazecars.com/dazed/Test3550bracket.html

I am running a Tilton Master Cylinder and the CNC Tripple reservoir which I am not certain is sold anymore.

Here is the only photo I have.

Do you have a link where you picked up that adaptor? Not sure how long that plastic cap will hold up before starting to leak?

Mark 3.1, Fortes hydraulic clutch kit. Pics are of Wilwood MC for clutch, it started leaking after 2 years so I replaced it with a Tilton, much higher quality...hard anodized bore with no pits.127912127913

I would really reconsider what you are doing. Awful lot of work and money for what? The hydraulic clutch isn't any easier or reliable. I have never had some one want power brakes taken out. Have done tons of installs though.

If you decide to go this route, I have a complete FFR/Wilwood pedal box for sale. I think the customer wants $500 for it.

Thanks for the replies - Mike I've pm'd you on the offer of the pedal box - I'd like to take you up on that offer. As far as the brakes go, I originally had the 93 cobra setup with a 93 cobra MC and booster. The brakes were not confidence inspiring especially on the track. I upgraded to Gordon's big brake set up with 6 piston Wilwoods up front and 4 piston rears. The difference is like night and day - I can pretty much outbrake any other car at the track - seriously, the difference is astounding. He recommends not using power assist with his setup. I've run it with the power setup and it's not bad, but I think it will be even better with manual brakes.

I don't mind the clutch cable setup, but it's pretty heavy, and for long road trips and especially in stop and go traffic, it's tiresome.

Plus I need to change my windshield as it has a big ding from a rock. So the body is already off the car since there are some wiring changes I need to make. I could try and make the Mustang pedal box work with the manual brakes and hydraulic clutch setup, but a much cleaner setup would be to go with the Wilwood pedal box that's designed to do it from the start. I don't recall it being an option back in 2010 so time to upgrade!

Thanks for the pics - much appreciated.

those are slick! do you seal them with teflon paste?

No. There is an O-ring. Just screw it in and snug it up. When putting the AN hose fitting on, be careful. I believe the process is finger tight, then no more than 1/4 turn more. Those fittings will fail if overtightened.
