View Full Version : Need help - interior door handle to latch issues....

Of course I didn't want the standard interior door handle, no, had to go and get something cooler looking (IMO) and of course more expensive. Advertised as "universal" they said, heck that should be no problem....

So I got a problem and need help in figuring out a solution. Rather hard to believe the veterans on here haven't come across this themselves at some point or have seen solutions somewhere along the line....

The handle is Clayton Machine Works EL-503.

The issue is the lever on the back that a cable/wire connects to is small, at a weird angle and doesn't have enough travel! So how do I get this puppy to work?

here's a top view, this is with the handle at full travel. Yes, that's right it does not open up any further than that. It's 1/2" travel at most! The size of the lever is small. That tiny hole is all there is for a wire.... Clearly, I can drill a different hole and even thread it - only thick enough for a 4-40 screw....

IDEAS PLEASE....

Full disclosure, I started to try to get some of the standard FFR parts to attach to it. Large pieces, mating up to a tiny lever, it got extremely kludgie fast... I'm now starting to think about RC car/airplane components - small 4-40 sized ball stud etc.

Look forward to suggestions, thanks guys.

Hope everyone is staying healthy!

Steve

addendum. Clayton is owned by Lokar. When I contacted them about this challenge, they suggested the Lokar standard universal handle to latch cable system. It appears to me that the ball stud that is intended to attach to the lever on the handle is too big for this handle. They could not confirm one way or another nor could they make any suggestions on my challenges.... not very darn helpful

Can your add a section of metal to the arm that the cable attaches to? That would give you a longer pull.
Be ashame not to use them, they look real nice.

I had a problem like this on a another rod. What I did was make a bell crank that multiplied the initial pull distance.

I used a similar latch made by Lokar. Needed to use a cable kit (they supply or from Speedway) which comes pulleys. I needed to run the cable back towards the rear to a pulley and then return to the latch to get it to work correctly. Works fine now. Sorry no photos.

Yeah, that might help...

@JimLev that what I started to do but difficult to make robust

@cob427sc Yes I saw that kit but it doesn't attach well to these handles, the Lokar ones are a bit different. Even if it did attach the travel isn't enough, need to use something along the lines of what Kamp suggested or extend the arm somehow...

Thanks for the suggestions, any others?
