Shot the white for the stripes today, then masked off and shot the metallic blue base AND THE TAPE LIFTED!!!! It was at the start of the third coat and I tried to keep it down but .......

Not the end of the world. Just a bit of sanding tomorrow then re-shoot the white. Just a pain in the ***.
The 1/4" fine line tape stayed put but the 1/2" fine line would not stick to it and that is where it lifted. Anyone else ever had this? Yes, I tacked just 30 sec prior to painting. It's a couple of hours setback and will not infringe on the clear-coat window but sheesh!

When I was painting my test panel, a washing machine front cover, I found that I had to wait about two hours for the tape to stick. The info sheet listed a much shorter time. So I made sure that I waited long enough when I did the car. That was with PPG Deltron. I recently painted my helmet, and had the same issue.
I am sure that it varies depending on the paint.

I haven't had good luck getting the fine line tape to stick to the same but different width fine line poly tape. I use the 1/4" fine line than next is good quality masking tape. I know, in some areas there is no way to use regular masking because of widths between the stripes, but good luck.

I think your problem was from putting vinyl tape on top of vinyl. I run vinyl for the edges only (German “Pro Band” orange) and then cover the field by laying over it and filling the big area with a good solvent safe paper base tape like 3M/Scotch 233+

Sorry about your frustration :(
