Welp since Massacheusetts is shut down I decided to fabricate my own Engine Hood Panels. At first I was going to make them out of Carbon fiber but I have since decided to have Don Ross Fabrications do a pair out of steel with stamped louvers. There will be three rows and the louvers will be angled. Don restored Garlit's Swamp Rat II, Jim Nichols wrecked car from Indy, and several other historic cars. I am looking forward to the outcome.

Bill,

I ordered the inside door handles last week, not expecting them until this mess is over. I received them in about four days, so someone is working.

That is too bad, I would have loved to gone with the carbon fiber units. but it has been nearly a week so I have Don Ross wailing away at them. BTW, Don restored Garlit's Swamp Rat II and the wrecked car Jim Nichols drove at Indy plus quite a few more. I am pretty stoked about what Don plans to do. With the fabricated from scratch panels I can build them to meet the cutlines we put in when we initially did the car. We would have had to cut the carbon fiber panels and then carbon fiber in the reinforcement where the panel cuts joined.

I'm glad to see Don is still beating up on sheet metal. Figured he would be in his rocking chair by now. He did some louvers on a 40 Ford I had.

He has a couple of world class Top fuel cars at various build stages in the shop right now. I had seen the Swamp Rat II at the museum. I know he restored the Jim Nichols [sic] car from the Indy wreck. He was pretty stacked up on work

I bought a pair of stamped steel louvers off eBay for $68

I plan to epoxy them on the inside of the panel and finish with a little bodywork so that when painted they look like they were made that way.

They did such a good job finishing my original panels I do not want to mess with them. I considered casting my own, then figured it would be better just to buy a pair from FFR. However, to do so means I would have had to recut and fit the panels to my current configuration in which the panels are split to allow removal without removing the headlights. At the end of the day, while waiting on the response I ran into Don Ross. A good deal of my decision factor was to have something Don fabricated on the car. Kory will still finish and paint whatever Don comes up with. Plus Don can fabricate and fit to my car without jeaopardizing the finish already on the panels.
