New owner did not build. Can anyone tell me where to find the chassis number? FFR. Is closed due to COVID-19.

Mark 2s didn't have a FFR VIN like the modern ones. You chassis number is welded inside the 2x3 tube only accessible by removing the driver side rear wheel. Look inside the open tube. not sure if this number is the same as the number on the original certificate of origin.

I think that welded # is different from the actual vin. As I understand it that # can be crossed to a vin but only by FFR.

FFR will not be able to cross reference the welded frame number to the SO if it was prior to 2005. They lost ALL data prior to 2005 during a computer system upgrade. I know because I was looking for all the same data from FFR for my Mk1.

The factory stamped a # under the trunk (pictured here with pen pointing to it).Maybe somehow it could help.

Also check under the steering wheel mounted on the frame just under the dash. Some were attached there.

I have a Mk 1.5. The only chassis number on the car is the one welded inside the cross tube as indicated by Michael. There is nothing under the trunk hoop nor the steering wheel frame area. The kit number of my car, which is the number that was on the CofO, was different from the frame number. When I originally registered the car in California they created a VIN with the letters CA followed by six numbers not associated with either my frame number nor my kit number. Texas honored that California VIN when I moved. So, lots of different numbers can be associated with at least the older cars.

No, FFR has nothing to with the VIN #. In almost all cases, that # is assigned by the state in which the car is registered. I thing a couple states may use the MSO #, perhaps that is what you're thinking of?
