View Full Version : Powder Coating? Am I over thinking this?

Probably not the most critical decision to consider, but I'm getting ready to send all the remaining small bare steel parts to a powder coater. As I was doing this, I had been planning to match the flat black powder coat that Factory Five put on the frame before they shipped to me. I was just going to match to that but started wondering if on some of the remaining items (Door and Rear Glass hinges as an example) if I would be smarter to go with a gloss black as that is easier to wipe down and clean up. The majority of these pieces will not be visible after the build is complete but likely will so, I don't want to have a mismatch of visible parts when they are next to the frame. (Radiator support, etc)

Am I overthinking this?

It's your car, do it the way that makes sense to you.

FWIW, I've had most parts PC'd gloss black but a few the flattest black that my shop had -- both are easy to clean. The flat doesn't show dust as easy as the gloss.

Isn't the newer powder coat Factory Five is doing more of a satin versus flat? Regardless, I'd lean toward copying that if you're doing black. Agreed most of them aren't easily seen. But maybe makes the most sense. Don't think there's a big difference either way as far as keeping clean or whatever.

Yes, the frame is probably better described as Satin rather than Flat. I'll just copy the frame as best I can. That was my initial thought anyway. Just didn't know how that looked on a finished car as I don't know how much of these parts can be seen after the build is done.

Gloss powder scratches VERY easily. Not deep scratches, but it gets a haze.

Silk Satin black powder coat from Prismatic is a great match, I've used it first hand.
I'm also told that hot rod satin black 2K rattle can from Eastwood is a good match. I have some but haven't used it yet.

Slider,

We PC all of the steel bit in a matching sating black, however, we do all to the sheet metal in a silver/black vein (it's called silver artery). Nice thing about a non-solid color on the sheet metal is that stone chips and little dings in the sheet metal disappear.

I agree on the satin black.

Thanks Chris. I've ordered the Satin Black and trying to consider if I end up PC the aluminum panels. I didn't on the MKIV and it's held up well over the last 10 years
