Question; do I really need to cut hole in the hood (under the scoop).
I was thinking of just install the scoop on top of the hood, and no hole under!

You could, but I'd recommend doing something with the scoop opening to close it up or it will look odd in my opinion.

I am just starting a build, why do many roadsters omit the scoop? Is it just cosmetic or is there an operational reason.

I omitted the scoop completely. The scoop does adds extra fresh air into the engine compartment. Also, I originally added a Radiator Cowl Cover, but later removed it. I have a heater and would not pull to open/circulate hot water valve, but would turn the fan on to circulate fresh air (that comes from the engine compartment) into the footboxes. When I added the Rad cowl cover, the temp under the hood (thus the air circulating in the footbox) went up considerably. Just adding... things to consider.

I did a Coyote powered car a while back. The owner's thinking was that the only thing the scoop was going to do was let more water into the engine compartment if (when ;)) he got caught in the rain and I agreed so I mounted the scoop but didn't cut a hole. You don't notice unless you get down and look back inside (even when I do cut them out my opening doesn't come as far forward as FFR's pattern).

I had someone tell me the same thing. Wanted to leave the hole out under the scoop so less water went inside when it rained. I asked if he was going to seal the whole underside of the engine compartment too. That ended the discussion. I personally would prefer to see the hole in the hood if the scoop is used. Looks too fake without IMO. In that case, just leave the scoop off. But I agree. Move the leading edge of the hole back. In general, I prefer the hole a bit smaller than the instructions and the just released video.

Never had a problem from water coming in the hood scoop, the cockpit is a different story. Lots of miles in the rain too.

Exactly, I could care less if the engine gets wet, I'd much prefer I stay dry.
I just claim to have water injection when it rains.

Some of the original cars, (and a few FFR replicas), added a grill, or a drilled plate, at the entrance to the scoop. That would prevent onlookers from seeing the scoop was just cosmetic.

True with the hood closed. Not so much with it open.

I think it also depends on what you are running for an engine. My 351W, with a spacer under the 4 barrel, has the top of the air cleaner 3/8" above the hood level. Sometimes a scoop is practical.

Put a "Bling" intake on the Coyote to look good, did not like the plastic cover, and to pull some torque out of the bottom end adding some power to the top of the range.

Hood needs the functional scoop to clear the manifold in my case. So it depends on what you are adding or not adding to the engine.

You can see the difference in height on a Gen I which stock should fit an uncut hood.

Note: You can get more power with a newer model year GT intake, but thats not what I was looking for as you can with the COYOTE series haze the tires in the first 3 gears without trying very hard.
