So what do you do during lockdown when the build is done and you can’t drive? You find other little details to mess around with. Then you take pictures and post on the forum. :o For the record, I’d much rather be driving. All in good time I hope.
May have heard or seen this somewhere else but thought the acrylic scoops would look a little more finished with black edges. Instead of clear and the body color showing through. Which is fine too BTW. I experimented with several rattle can black paints I had on hand and found the Rust-Oleum Appliance Epoxy gloss black from HD seemed to stick OK and didn’t bother the acrylic. Same stuff that matches the gloss black powder coat FF used to use. While testing on scraps, also tried dulling the surface with 1500 grit paper. Didn’t show through once painted and seemed to stick even better. So that’s what I did.
With the scoops in placed, traced around the inside edge of the body onto the scoops with an ultra fine point Sharpie. Used this as the border for 3M 1/2" Scotch Blue Fine Line Plastic Striping Tape. Then masked off the rest on both sides. I actually used foil on the inside where I was painting on the off chance that anything would bleed through and spoil the clear acrylic. Vapor or otherwise. Sprayed the black. Waited 15 minutes or so and pulled the tape. Nice sharp lines. Cool! Let the pieces sit for several days to make sure completely cured. Then put back on the car today. Turned out nice. Does look more finished.
For the record, also during this time I took down and replaced 11 windows worth of blinds in our house. Out with the hodgepodge the previous owner had installed and replaced with new matching custom fit blinds. That’s one thing off the long standing “other” list. Still plenty more to go.
