View Full Version : Bad vibration after swapping the engine

I swapped my old and tired 302 for a Levy 347. I also replaced the engine and tranny mount for new ones. I have a vibration that starts at around 60 mph and I cannot find the source. Pinion angle should be a suspect but since I did not change anything in the geometry I am trying to identify other suspects...any ideas?

Any more details you can provide on your roadster? MKIV, III, II? Assuming you torque the engine to the engine mounts correctly? What gear are you in at 60, 3rd or 4th?

Did Gordon supply the flywheel and balancer with the engine?

You didn’t knock a weight of the drive shaft or a wheel you chance? Is it speed or rpm based?

It is speed related.
It is an MKII and yes the mounts are torqued.
4th or 5th gear does not make a difference.
Damper and flywheel came with the engine

If it isn’t gear or rpm related, and depends on speed it’s more then likely either in the drive shaft or wheels. Check for proper lug nut torque, make sure the wheels are fully seated and not missing any weights. If that checks out check the drive shaft to make sure the balance weight is on it. Then check for tight u-joints and tight flange bolts. Also make sure the flange is fully seated on the axle.

I did my homework and found out that my vibration has nothing to do with pinion angle!! I now know that the vibration is between 1900 and 2400 RPM no matter what, so I guess it is engine or tranny related...

Did you remember the alignment pins on the flywheel before installing the clutch?

Quick question. Installing a new flywheel & clutch. Is it worthwhile to freeze the dowel pins before I install them?

Mine tapped right in without freezing, but I suppose it couldn't hurt.

Pilot bearing in the back of the crank? Did you check it out? Some engine builders swear by using a bushing that is not the same diameter.

Was the bellhousing indexed?
