I need the dimension of the brass strip inside the pillars of the windshield that some replace with the stainless-steel strip from Whitby’s. I will be pulling my windshield out of the box later and will be able to measure mine. However, I wanted to get started on making my own before I do that. I’ve got a piece of stainless that is 1/8” x 2” x 12” and want to get a couple of strips, the right width, cut off it at a machine shop. Hopefully, this piece will work for me??

Thanks, George

Hey George,

I bought mine from Whitby's..I believe they were only 3/32" thickness though, not 1/8". They could mill it down I suppose but probably cheaper to buy some stock the right thickness.

Or cheaper to simply buy from Whitby unless you have a machine shop willing to work for coffee and donuts. Of course cheaper still is to just use what the windshield has. I have not ever had one of the brass inserts strip---and I've done "a few" ;) Maybe I've just been lucky...

When I got my Whitby's parts, years ago.....I got the screws that came with the Brass strips mixed up with the screws Whitby supplied. The Brass ones are 10-24. the stainless ones were 10-32. Don't know if it's still this way, but it's a good way to strip one of the holes...like I did.

Dave, thanks for the follow up with thread size. 10-32 will be stronger against striping, if I do this I'll be tapping my own.

Jeff, thanks for the feed back. One reason my car is not done is because I continue to take on these small projects. Especially with the unpredictability of Whitby's, sad because I'd probably just order them for him but........So, my decision to make my own is because I keep reading about the striping out of the brass piece. Maybe too I'll just work with the brass and if I end up......;), I'll just take my time.

Thanks, George

If you do manage to strip one of the holes, it can be repaired (ask me how I know ). I posted details on my repair on the other forum: https://www.ffcars.com/threads/windshield-bracket-thread-repair.582801/
