The castle nuts on my spindles are bottoming out to far down the ball joints for the cotter pins to work properly. Any help appreciated.124774124775
Add a washer or two between the spindle and the nut. I recommend using hardened (grade-8) hardware if you can.

What your picture shows, is completely correct, nothing else needs to be done.

One end looks good, but the other shows the nut not fully tightened.

The bottom castle nut (green circle) is just hand tight. The top castle nut(red circle) as you noticed is not even hand tight. When I tighten that one the cotter pin will not be anywhere close to the castle nut. I'll add some grade -8 washers and torque.
Thanks!

I found a real nice piece at the local Ace Hardware. It is a shaft collar for an electric motor. It is hardened, glossy black and fit perfectly. Of course I did not use the set screw, just used it like a washer. This is a link to (https://www.acehardware.com/departments/lawn-and-garden/farm-and-ranch-supplies/farm-equipment-parts/7409592) a similar one, NOT THE SAME, I could not find it on line, but at the store it was in one of the hardware drawers on the same isle as the nuts/bolts, etc... and as I said, it is black.

I only looked at the bottom nut, completely overlooked the upper. :( Sorry

Badasp that is a great find. I have seen those when looking for other stuff but have not had an occasion to use them. Or, more likely, I forgot about them. Next trip I may just grab a couple in the common sizes like 3/8, 1/2 inch.
