I’ve been having a hard time finding a mirror and way of mounting it that would work well with the Premium Soft Top on my MK4 roadster. What I’ve seen so far is either smaller than I’d like, out of character with the car and/or has a limited range of adjustability.

It occurred to me that mounting the standard mirror that came with my MK4 complete kit just below the hinge on the top’s header bow might work. I’ve temporarily mounted the mirror using 3M clear double stick tape and it looks perfect and has all the adjustability I’d like. There is room below the hinge to drill two mounting holes and probably even make them big enough to epoxy in threaded inserts for the screws.

Before I start drilling into the header bow, has anyone tried this before? Is anyone aware of any show stopper?

Others have already shown ways to mount the Factory Five mirror to the windshield when the top is off. https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/showthread.php?25596-Rear-view-Mirror

I left the FFR mirror in the regular location, bought a basic parts store mirror, screwed the mounting plate to the header bow. Then I swapped the set screw on the mirror for a thumb screw. Dimmable and the thumbs screw makes it quick on and off

Thanks for the thumb screw idea. I can see that working for the FFR mirror as well.

Did you mount the mirror spanning the hinge in the center of the bow or offset toward the driver?

The standard mirror and location on the dash works fine for me. Have you tried it yet? It might be height dependant.

There is the option of the windshield support rod with the mirror on there. A more authentic option.

The mounting plate is just to the right of the hinge in the header. It’s a standard double joint mirror. I opened up one of the joints to get the angle I wanted.

Mine was needed due to the luggage bag I use when traveling, otherwise the regular mirror is fine

What do you do if you want to remove the top? Drive w/o a mirror?

I mounted a light-weight mirror directly to the windshield when I first built the car. With the soft top I didn’t have to do any changes. I got it at Autozone and has been perfect for 13 seasons and 73k miles of smiles! I’m one of those KISS guys.

I did the same with my soft top (mounted mirror on bow for better visibility). Only drawback is looking at your dash the 1st 100 times to find it's not there.
