I've found where I believe I need to install the oil pressure unit on my BPE 347. The oil pressure unit housing seems to touch the engine block when I line it up, and it seems I'll be risking cross threading if I try to tighten it. Am I missing something?

You should use an extension. Standard installation on the SBF for years. Lots of different versions out there. This is the one I used on my last SBF build. https://lmr.com/item/LRS-9278A/1979-89-Mustang-Oil-Pressure-Sending-Unit-Extension-50L. Visible in this pic below. Another option which some recommend is a flexible extension and mount the sensor off the engine. Whatever, don't leave it like that.

X2 on the extender. Works perfectly.
Use steel fitting screwed into the block. I have heard that vibration, over time, can cause that extension to break if it's brass.
You can also find shorter extensions that have two female taps so you can measure both the pressure at a gauge and have an idiot light. Or run one line to a 'T' and work both from there.
Holden in the UK is where I got my short one but I've seen others here since I bought mine.

The one I bought from Summit is steel:

Here's the one with two ports:

the short 45 works better if you are using an electric fuel pump.

I have an extension and drilled and tapped for a gauge and light. I have the light because doing autocross, you have no time to look at your gauges. I also double used the light for oil temp.
