View Full Version : Trunk Hinge Modifications

Has anyone modified the roadster trunk hinge? Seems it can be made so that it will not go down into the trunk space as far as the stock swing hinge does. I'm in the process of using some heavy duty cardboard that I can cut on the band saw for mocking up the hinge shape and it looks like I can cut about 1 to 1-1/2" off the part that sticks down into the trunk space when closed.

My thought would be to use 3/8" aluminum plate instead of the 3/8" steel that FFR uses.

Your thoughts are welcomed.

Thanks, George

If you come up with better a solution, I may be interested.
My guess is others would be too.

There are billet aluminum hinges available from a vendor on another forum. Very expensive.

Factory Five did away with the big "horseshoe" like was used on your early Mk4 about 7 years ago and superseded them with these. They would be a direct swap of you want to retrofit.

Thanks Jeff

I went to a couple of the newer build manuals to see if a change had taken place and looks like they are using the same picture of the big horse shoe one. But yes, that's sort of what I came up with.

Photos in the manual aren't very telling George. They use lots of old photos for things that are inconsequential (like a change in the shape of the trunk hinge arm). BTW, the first version of this shape were thick material like the horseshoe but later they sized it down to about 1/2 that, like around 1/8" which makes it easy to adjust the position of the trunk lid left to right by simply putting a little muscle to it to bend the arms---no tools required ;)
