Hi,
I am wondering if anyone has used an electric power steering pump other than fast Freddie’s?

This last year I took my car to Track night once and the power steering fluid got really hot. It vented fluid out the breather in the reservoir cap, and was so hot I couldn’t touch the reservoir cap. I don’t think the pump liked the 4000 to 7000 rpms the coyote was living at. I am planning on switching to a electric power steering pump.

What engine driven pump are you using? I have the KRC system on my Coyote and it's been fine, although (full disclosure) not tracking it. But I do know the KRC setup gears it down so it's not running engine RPM. Having said that the aluminum pump they're selling now with their Coyote setup has a max RPM of 9,000. So would seem up to the task.

Another question is whether you are running a cooler. That would help. And many people swear by Honda PS fluid as running cooler than other brands.

I have a pump from Forte. I knew from the start that it was not a great pump for high rpms. I do not have a cooler. It sounds like a good idea but I didn’t think it would be enough. I may check into the KRC pump.

I used the Toyota MR2 spyder pump. Simple install - just plumb it and wire it up. 2000-2005 model yr i think?

Do a google search and you can read all about it (other applications besides ours). I even found a guy on ebay making a mounting bracket to make the install easier.

I used the Toyota MR2 spyder pump....

That's the same Denso pump Fast Freddie sells with his.

What about a pulley change?

Sorry. Should have been more clear. Always heard it was the same pump (but images don’t look the same. Is his from the earlier mr2 not the spyder? Mine has a one piece pump and reservoir?). Was just saying there is a cheaper option if you are willing to source it yourself / used if price was the issue.

Oops you're right. It is the MR2. This is the Fast Freddie setup in my #7750 build. Worked OK. But went traditional engine driven on my two builds since then. KRC setup on the Coyote. Not cheap but excellent quality and like how the boost can be adjusted with their flow valves.

Where the pulley is a larger one won’t fit.

You MUST use a cooler. Even a smallish fin and tube cooler will make a huge difference. If you're going to track it regularly, find a place to install a plate style cooler.

The pump running at top speed will add a bit of heat, of course. But the heavy use of steering on a road course will also add a bit of heat. If you switch to an electric pump, you'll still need to add a cooler.

When I started losing PS near the end of an AX run on hot days I switched to Honda PS fluid. That alone gave me a 90% fix. Then I added a cooler and that was 100%. I used a trans cooler plumbed into the return line to the pump.

CraigS - which power steering pump are you running that Honda fluid in?

I happened on this about 10 yrs ago when I bought an AC kit that had a bracket for both the AC compressor and PS pump. It's a GM style as best I can tell. I cut the pressure relief spring some to reduce assist. It requires a remote reservoir.
