View Full Version : Roll Bar Gap
I have about an 1/8" gap on the side of the rear leg where it slides into the main hoop of the FFR roll bar. Any recommendations on how to eliminate the gap? I've tried flipping the rear leg around and holding the main hoop up a little, but I still have a small gap, that I can't live with. :)
Thanks
Brian

That’s due to compounded misalignment. Some fit better than others but it is what happens when you have welded components build in mass quantities in hopes that everything is compatible later. Looks like it is seated on the back side but open at the other. Mine was worse and I could not get it to work so I had a new roll bar made at a local shop.
Some guys cut off the rear mounting stub and have is welded in the correct location to get the angles right. I was too far along to do this to mine. Hope you get it figured out.
I think I found a solution where I can grind down a 1/8" on the side of the top edge of the rear leg of roll bar. If I did this...could the chrome be re-chromed?

I had the same issue. Fit fine on initial fitment/drilling, then had a gap once I got the body on...go figure. I used some 150 grit sandpaper and sanded the inside and outside of the rollbar areas that slide together. I also used a Dremel with sanding drum on the inside around the drilled holes to smooth out any burs from drilling. Did that a couple of times and is definitely a tighter fit but went together.
And in answer to your question, yes it can be re-chromed but that will be MUCHO dollars. I once looked into getting the small front bumper for my 67 Camaro re-chromed instead of buying a repop. I think the quotes were around $1,500 - $2,000. However, you can get it powder coated in a chrome finish for a fraction of that. My guy here will do it for $30.

Can you rotate the bar around the stub to see if it fits better, or have you already drilled the holes?

Yes, I tried and it didn't help.

The chrome can be stripped and re-done by a chrome plating shop. Now, if you are going to go to all that effort, have you considered a Breeze roll bar? They look so much better in my opinion and I wish I'd used them on my car.

I will probably end up going that route. I'm going to try grinding it down and see what happens. Worst case scenario I buy the Breeze roll bar.

Have you contacted FFR and discussed. Just a guess but I bet they would send you a new one if it a matter of bad workmanship when it was made.

Question; Is the roll bar hoop already bolted in?

No, it's not.

I have not, but great idea. Thanks

No, it's not.
Usually you can raise or lower the roll bar hoop to take care of the gap. Once satisfied, bolt the rear leg to the hoop first then drill the hoop and rear leg chassis stub for mounting.
I was able to grind down one side and get the gap much better. The downside is it needs to be re-chromed as I have a couple chips.

I had a similar problem and ended up with chips in the chrome as well. Dropped the down tube off at the chrome plater today. $150 and 2-3 weeks.
