View Full Version : How much room do you need for a build?

So I am eagerly awaiting the debut of the 818 kit so I can jump in feet first into building my own toy.
But here is the problem, I may have a garage but half of it is taken up by my tools and yard stuff... and the other half by my wife's brand new car. She is still hesitant to drive it in the rain its so new!

And this isnt your everyday modern 2 car garage... its an old school "I can barely fit 2 cars in here and nothing else" kind of garage. It kind of matches our 1902 home.
So I have a feeling that I'm going to be renting a space of some sort for this.

But just in case... How much room do you need?
And how little room have some of you done these builds in?
Have any of you had the same situation and done a build in a rented garage / storage unit space?

I just want to be sure I have all my ducks in a row when the time comes.

Thanks!

If either Steven (if thats who it was in the container) or those in a 1 car garage...
Please speak up!
I would LOVE to hear your input and the different obstacles you had and how you overcame them!

There's lots of scenarios but I think the most important thing is to store the 19 boxes in a separate place or out of the way place so you don't trip over them or have to move them back and forth. They are numbered in the order you need to do the build so accessing them as needed it very efficient. Of course, you won't be able to not open each one like Xmas presents but you need to do that for inventory anyway and then store away. If you have a safe place outside of the garage, your body would be just as happy there and a lot of the body work can be done without dusting up your garage. Your cradle should have some casters so you can move the chassis around (e.g. move outside to weld something, etc). Mine moved to every area of the 3 car garage over time (sharing space with new car just like you). You will find that it gets easier as each box disappears. I have a few shelves holding the remaining components in plain view which is quite nice. It gives me some ongoing visual motivation. Good luck and have fun!! WEK.

I'm currently redoing my garage and need to plan for adequate storage space for the boxes, tool, the body, etc. I'm already planning on fabbing a body buck lift to get the body store at the ceiling and out of the way till I'm ready to work on it.

I see you mentioned 19 boxes. Someone else mentioned 25 boxes. What is the minimum boxes in a complete kit? And what are the dimensions/weights on the boxes. This will help me determine my shelving configuration and what I can fit in the attic space above the garage.

Thanks.

Mine was a basic kit with some extras like tubular control arms, etc. You would be safer going with the 25 number. The wind shield box was the one I worried about the most. I found a very special place for it. I believe the side pipe box was the heaviest. But it sounds like you have a good plan going. The wind shield is in a box about 59x23x9 and weighs about 20 lb. that's the only one I have left unopened. I bet someone has figured out the cubic footage for the whole thing. Good luck, WEK.

Thanks for the quick reply. Yeah, I'm big on planning and try to minimize surprises.

My garage is roughly 20' x 26' with 14' ceilings. I'm already looking into high-lift garage doors to make more room up at the ceiling, and right now there are 6'h plastic shelving from HD wrapping most of the walls that are packed with crap like seasonal clothes and decorations. I'll probably move everything either out or up high on wall shelves to make way for tool chests, wall cabinets, and (2) 8' work benches. Knowing the storage for the boxes will only be needed until the car gets finished Ideally I want to get as much up in the attic space over the garage that I can and leave more room in the garage for working. Hopefully someone (either from FFR or who recent got their delivery) can step in here and give me some more info on the boxes' capacity so I can know for sure what I'm dealing with before I spend money.

Thanks again.

Zulu built his in one of those 12x24 Storage barn style buildings. Everything in its place is the key. I built mine in a one car garage with the help of a storage shed to do the dirty work in.
Buy you a storage shed instead of renting.. you will pay for it.

My garage basically doesnt have room for 2 cars AND toolchests.
But I do have a workshop area in my basement.

You think I would be better off squeezing along side my wife's new car, getting all the tools off the ground and doing some of the "dirty work" in the basement workshop? Is there stuff I can do in the basement???
My garage is alley-access so I can't really bring big parts around to other parts of the yard and I don't have a driveway.

(and front yard is about 6ft above street level so there is no going the front yard route either)

I built a barn specific for the purpose of the build. I had and used every inch during my 2 year build.

Thats alot of room and alot of time. Dang.
I guess maybe I should start another thread on how much time your build took!
