What is the fate of the transfer case, the viscous coupler etc. ? I would think you'll be removing it and putting a new plate over the rear of the trans. Is that correct ? Are you using Subaru's part for that (from the old FWD imprezas) or fabricating one new ? Or is the engine placed far enough forward to use the rear diff ? Are you utilizing (and probably shortening) the OEM shift shaft or will that be re-engineered ?

The porsche 914 guys use a kit that is out there. I can't remember specifically but it removes the transfer case & involves a plate and some sort of ring that goes on the end of the mainshaft.

I took the tour at FF5 earlier this week and there was a plate at the end of their 818 R&D transmission, no transfer case. Our guide expected the final kit to have the same.

I'm jealous.
I liked how one of the design submissions showcased the plate in the back, not something you see very often.

I'm going to remove the drive shaft but keep the U-joint. Then I'll weld on a big old propeller. It's gonna be bad-a$$! :)

Is the propellar to help with propulsion, or to help move the air under the car?

Haha, which is then ducted and fed to the intercooler.

Humm, that little shaft coming out of the plate I believe is the shifter linkage. It's going to be interesting how the new linkage will link and how much more it will extend out of the back...

when done on the 914s that is what it looks like, the transfer case remains, you just pull the center diff. the output shaft is replaced with a plate as is pictured. those guys use the old mk1 mr2 shifter with a homebrew cable linkage.
loving the adjustability and use of heim joints in the suspension pictured above. It looks like its going to be best to use the factory downpipe and maybe run a horizontally-mounted 3" muffler. i'm interested to see the location of the cooling system and mounting of the TMIC. I could definitely see some use for mr2-inspired ducting integrated into the body.

Yeppers, That is the shift shaft poking out the back. Certainly approach to linkage will be interesting. I'm not sure that the upper or lower A arm treatment leaves me with a feeling of confidence. I think I'll have to stop by Wareham and see what's up. I need a job......

shift linkage will probably look similar to this

Hate to show my lack of insight in publlic, but is the frame/engine/transaxle pictured first by Inthenameofweez the prototype frame at FFR?
Thanks,
Bill

yup, thats the one they had at the open house
I hope FFR can come up with a cleaner solution for the shift linkage than what's on that 550

I would like to see a cable shift, is the Sube a cable shift ?

None of the targetted donors use a cable shift. Subaru shifters are generally very simple, think VW Beetle - in reverse.

Subaru's linkage has been essentially the same since '93. WRX clutches were pull-type until '06, when they went to a more conventional push TO bearing. I can't see a slave cylinder on the FF chassis. I would think they will be utilizing the stock hydraulics for the clutch on the 818, is that correct ?

Clutch actuation is hydraulic since the late 90s. The cables I was referring to are to control the shift linkage. Plenty of pics on 914world.com

A cable shift on a car not designed for cable shift will be a difficult design point. Curious to see what FFR has in mind for this. It will most likely have to be a dual cable system, and it will probably end up similar to the picture posted above.

Here's an existing solution

I'm sure they'll have something like that
