Thinking of re-routing the cold air intake from its current location pictured here. To a shorter and straighter path to the engine vents as pictured here. What ya think ?

Im not even an amature on this but first thought would be the venturi effect or vaccume at the side louver may be counter productive?

In any case you want less turbulance through the maf and plumbing to the side vent may increase it!

I have a set up similar to what you propose. Not necessarily shorter but maybe a touch cooler. 1998 Mustang Cobra 4.6 l DOHC.

Would-Not the air flowing through the 'filter' eliminate the "venture effect" ?

I think they're referring to the pressure loss you'd encounter with the air passing through the vents.

Aren't those vents set up to extract air from the engine bay? That would be the opposite of what you want for an engine cold air supply.

You are correct. Those vents are there to pull air out of the engine bay. It's a negative pressure zone on the body.

If you want to bring in cold air, you should build a heat shield over the top of the exhaust, and bring in cold air from the top of the wheel well.

For me, choosing this location was the only way to get all the necessary intake pieces to fit while avoiding chassis members, engine components, etc. It is what it is in terms of air temperature, density, volume, etc. At speed, I don't think there are any discernable micro-environment areas under the hood of these cars, just a whole lot of turbulence, I suspect. The engine runs great.

Best way to find "the air flow disturbance under the hood" is .
1)A camera mounted under the hood, pointed at.
2) Strips of ribbon/cloth under the hood.....At idle, and at speed, they should indicate whats going on.

Yes, the side vents are for heat extraction. I agree with Bob. If you want cold air, you are going to have to get it from the front or wheel well and heat shield it.

It is all a guess without measurements. I would think temperature would be the main concern. more than flow. It would be interesting to see readings. You can get a thermocouple pretty cheap on Amazon.

I have IAT gauge on my EFI system, even on 90* plus days it will hover around 105* while moving. Stop in traffic and yes it'll come up, but not drastically. There is a lot of space around the engine, and A LOT of air movie around it

I'm not going to address where you should focus your cold air intake, but I will address the "waste of time": There is no such thing as a waste of time on these cars. Even just sitting in the garage and staring at it is not a waste of time! :)
