Any words of wisdom for the guys that do not have the vacuum assist for the coolant system yet? Is there a heater hose to help get the air out of the coolant system? I heard that there was a thread on this but I cannot seem to find it.

I fill it from the pipe on the drivers side front of the intake. I put a tall funnel in there and fill her up. If the car has heat I fill until the water comes out of the heater tube then connect it where the funnel is. . If not I leave the radiator cap off, fill it 'till it spills out of the radiator cap, then fill until the tube is full. That's it. Done.

never had problem with an air pocket.

The stand alone expansion tank makes it self burping. Just fill it up and run it through a few heat cycles.

G'day Zac,

1. Plumb it up EXACTLY as installed in a Mustang. (you can find diagrams on line) Deviate from the from the intended design at you peril!
2. Install correct reservoir tank, Moroso make a nice one, so that you have appropriate ports for connecting hoses.
3. Either connect heater hoses to your heater, MUST use a 4 way (bypass) valve to ensure flow when heater isnt being used. Or install a bypass hose with restrictor from heater inlet and outlet to ensure correct flow to left hand cylinder bank. Easiest way is to buy the genuine heater hoses and join them at the back of the engine.
3. Engine will then self burp continuosly through the small hose on the top of the left hand bank to the reservoir tank.

Capping cooling system ports on these engines is a quick way to fry the left hand head. Luckily I found this out before following the FFR instructions of the time that recommended capping off coolant ports. Unfortunately another Aussie builder didnt and ended up with a huge bill and a lot of anger.

Cheers, Nigel in South Oz.

The hose from the left hand head has a one way valve in it. Don't get it in backwards.

Modular Motorsports sells a kit to improve head cooling, and makes heater installation less of a problem.

Hey Bob - I've seen you suggest this kit before. Is there another thread where you talk about how it makes heater installation less of a problem? Thanks.

I'm sure there is, but I couldn't point you to it. I know I've mentioned this before.

Looks like you have to pull the engine to mount up.

Is there room for this mod? The firewall is awfully close.

given that the coyote is shorter front-to-back than other motors, it "should" fit, others may chime in that have done this mod...

I think it's a good idea since the engine bay is already cramped, added cooling for cyl#8 is a nice to have for sure!

I will go look, but it is tight on the truck.

Bob,

There are two holes on the expansion tank. which one goes to the outlet on the radiator port by the fill cap? Where does the other go?

Nigel,

Room is at a premium. I wanted to do as you said but expansion space is limited already. I might I the next build. Thanks for the help. Great idea.

Much like the other thread about changing out the oil pump gears and timing change sprocket, the #8 cooling mod is something to perhaps consider if you're going to track your car or add a bunch more power, e.g. forced induction. For a basically stock engine used mostly for street driving, just not an issue. Much has been written about that issue on the Mustang forums. Haven't seen one instance of anyone here citing a problem, for whatever that's worth. Approaching 10 years now with the Coyote installations.

The engine is tucked up tight against the firewall in the Hot Rod - no room for the CMCV motors. Looks like I have 2" clearance at the freeze plugs so maybe the kit will work, but I may have an interference with my engine hoist bracket on the PS. I've emailed MMR asking for dimensions so I can see if it will fit.

My understanding is that the Roadster and Coupe have more clearance so this shouldn't be an issue for them.

Is it possible to get an air pocket that doesn't allow the pump tp move fluid? I've filled mine as described above (about 3.75 gallons in the system). Ran for a while, and the expansion tank is HOT, but the tube at the bottom of the radiator is GOOD and cold. Seems like it should be warm at least. Any real way to evaluate if the pump is ACTUALLY working, or ACTUALLY moving fluid?

I spent weeks trying to burp my Coyote, finally went down to Harbor freight and spent $80 on a coolant flush kit that runs off a compressor. Absolutely best $80 tool I have ever bought. Got all the air out of the system in one shot, motor runs 180-190F in Florida’s heat.
