View Full Version : Wiring gremlin.....

Okay, this one's driving me nuts (and, yes, I know....it's not a long trip even on a good day.)

Installed Mark's led headlamp set (https://www.breezeautomotive.com/shop/led-headlight-kit/) and it all went very well. All the lights worked fine, cycled from hi to low and back several times. No issues. Tonight flipped the high-beams on and suddenly....no lights. No high beam, no low beam. Turn/stop/tail light work fine. Fuses are good.

This one has me flummoxed.....

Anyone have an idea????

1st thought would be that the new lights draw more current and have blown out the relay contacts - or - the switch (not knowing how you have it wired) contacts have burned.

Need more info on wiring plan, switches used, relays used, grounding technique.

Sorry to hear you are having issues Ray . . .

Not knowing how it’s wired, makes i a bit difficult. Since you have nothing, I’m thinking you have a ground issue. Put a test light with a new ground and check for voltage at the lamp and work your way to the switch.

My first thought was a ground issue also

I suspect you know this. But if you're replacing the kit standard Halogen headlights, the Breeze LED setup (AKA Watson's Streetworks) draws far less current. I don't remember the exact numbers because it's been awhile since I installed that kit in my 20th Anniversary Roadster. But as I recall it's roughly 25% of the draw. So very unlikely anything with wiring, relays, headlight switch, etc. failed unless for some other reason beside excess current. Seems a little unlikely that the lights and related power supplies themselves would fail both sides at the same time. So I'm not being much help, but at least maybe eliminating things. At the risk of being obvious. :p

best guess is a switch (either the dimmer or headlight) failed or there is a faulty/loose connection . go back and systematically trace power through the system - shouldn't need anything other than a 12v test light - i.e check for 12 v coming in to the switch, then going out - depending on the results, go to the next connection and do the same. should find the issue

I recommend investing in or borrowing a Power Probe for any electrical trouble shooting. It checks continuity, power, ground, and let's you power circuits individually.

This is the one I have:

Power Probe PP319CARB Carbon Fiber Special_Use_Testers https://www.amazon.com/dp/B007WQQNQA/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_SQZgEb7NDQCBA

Thanks to all. Wiring isn’t my strong suit and my knowledge goes just a little beyond “on-off”. I’m going to start with the hi/low switch and the headlight switch itself (because I already have replacements for those) and see where that takes me.

Replaced both the light switch and the hi/low beam toggle. No joy:( I've got hazards, brake and turn but no head or tail lights. They all worked for a few days but hadn't driven the car since I was also replacing the shocks. Pulled the lights on after I backed it our of the garage and hit the hi-beams. Then, NOTHING! Fuses are good and I can't figure this out.

Ground's?

Ray,

All my lighting gremlins have been caused by bad connections. I'm using Weatherpak connectors and have had a couple of cases where the ground wire (smallest gauge wire in the connector) just isn't good. Try testing the pins in your connectors with an Ohm meter using the pins for +12v and ground in the connector. Check both the feed side and the light side. To check the light side, you can check for continuity through the connector to the light and back to the connector.

I have been going through my wiring checking connection, ringing out circuits, and got frustrated with the existing wiring diagram. Attached is a marked up version of the headlight switch after I figured out what makes it tick. This might help you figure out your issue. In general if the headlight switch is pulled out all the way it should pass non-fused power to the high/low switch. Hope it helps and good luck.

Update? Resolved?

Yep. Since I've got nothing but time now I went through every wire from the switch to the lights. Reconnected each joint using shrink/solder connectors and re-did all the grounds. Still not sure what the exact problem was but it's gone now.

Thanks for all the help

That's good. But I hate it when I fix something, and I don't know how I fixed it.
