View Full Version : what size fittings for power steering lines?

I purchased the power steering option with my kit. The lines are 6AN. On the power steering rack, the two line ports seem to be NPT thread and are different sizes. The two adapters that F5 sent are the same size (go F5!) so one does not fit. The top hole seems to be 3/8". The bottom hole is driving me crazy. A 1/4" NPT to 6AN adapter is too loose. It jiggles and can thread all the way in. I don't think that a 5/16" NPT to 6AN adapter exists. Does anyone know what size fittings I am supposed to use?

The lines that FFR supplied me with fit without any adapters. The high pressure line has crimped fittings on both ends and the low pressure line only has a fitting on the rack side. When the fittings are installed on the rack, they will "jiggle" when fully tightened, this is normal if it's the hard line moving and not the threaded fitting itself. If you find you can't make them work or don't like the lines FFR provides, Breeze makes a nice braided flex line setup that will get you fixed up.

The rack fittings are NOT NPT, they are ORB. That is a straight thread with an O-ring on the fitting, at least they used to be on the Mustang racks.

I think the rack fittings are 9/16-18 for the pressure port and 5/8-18 for the return side. I believe the pump-side pressure fitting is 1/2-20.

As Rich said they are O ring fittings not NPT. Rack is 5/8 and 9/16 and if you are using a Ford pump the pressure side is also 5/8. When installing the O ring fittings make them only snug; if you really bear down and overtighten them you will likely either cut or displace the O ring.

My Cardone reman Ford pump has a 16x1.5mm thread at the high pressure outlet. Mark at Breeze had one to fit as well as everything else I needed.

When in doubt, call Mark at Breeze.

I purchased the necessary components from him and sort of, "built" my own lines. He walked me through everything I needed and it worked out great.

Mark took care of me with everything from the fittings on the steering rack to an fittings to braided stainless hose to make up the lines.

I got the fittings from Breeze yesterday. They come with an o-ring and a washer. The instructions said that if the port on the steering rack has a bevel, not to use the washer. Mine didn't, so I didn't use the washer. I installed the fittings. When the o-ring started to squish out, I backed off a smidge. The amount of torque is barely past finger tight.

I took the car out for a spin today and for the first time, no power steering leak! Woohoo!

You did just the opposite of the instructions? Glad it's not leaking.

My steering rack has a bevel so I did not use the washer per the instructions.

I know this is an old thread but I am having a hard time figuring out what size fitting goes on the pressure side of a Saginaw P series power steering pump. The BPE tech guy said it should be 18mm-1.5 O ring. I got one and it is way too big. Is it possible that fitting is 5/8-18?
