Guys,

I'm going to put my 351 Windsor on an engine test stand to break it in. I'll need to purchase a bell housing for mounting purposes. Any recommendations on a bell housing and transmission combo that will be best for a 300 hp 351 Windsor going in a FFR?

Thanks!

Ben

I would check with Mike Forte "forum vendor"

I am running a Tremec TKO behind a quicktime bellhousing connected to a 351W
but a lot of guys are running a stock Aluminum bellhousing

May I ask why you're building a test stand to break in an engine? If you're using a roller cam, as most do nowadays, very little break in is required. Even with a hydraulic flat tappet cam, cam and lifter break in can be done in the car in a short amount of time. Most first starts are done as a go-cart chassis and in the rare case that the engine has to come back out, its easy to do.

If its just something you want to do, thats all cool and go for it. But it seems like a lot of work and investment to do something that may not need to be done.

Not being critical, man. Everybody builds their own way. Mostly just wondering what your thinking behind this is.

Thanks Boydster. My reasoning is that I need the confidence boost of seeing the engine start up to justify paying $20k for the kit. I've never done anything else like this before and I've built this engine from the block up by myself. If the engine starts up, it will be easier to ask my wife for more money! :).

Thanks for the response. I'll take any advice I can get!

Have you bought the roadster kit yet?

Most racers in my area have a run in stand. I would talk to the machine shops and parts stores, if they know of any near you.
Building one gets more involved than you think. You will want oil pressure gauge, temp gauge, fuel pump and lines, radiator, hoses, battery and switches.

A stand could be built of wood, but most go steel tubing or angle. Welding is pretty much necessary.
Anyone can shoot up any of my statements and I am not trying to discourage your plans. ,,,,just an up front to what you will need.
Good luck, let us know how you progress.
One other thing, if you build one, it needs width to resist rotation. Blipping the throttle, could roll a narrow stand over.

Not yet. Waiting to get engine and rear end ready.

Call a local tuner/dyno shop and see what they would charge to first start the engine and run it in. Maybe even have it tuned while they run it in.

I've used the Larin test stand that you can get virtually anywhere for about $400. See Amazon link. It's not of the highest quality, but certainly gets the job done. I think it can be modified to accommodate most any engine. You should recoup about 75% of the cost if you want to sell it afterwards.

I know what you mean in terms of wanting to see it run before installing, especially if you built it.

Thanks for everyone's responses. I couldn't find a used one so I bought one from Summit Racing.

Hey everyone. Im looking for a wiring diagram for my 351 windsor. I have it on the test stand but I have no idea where to start in the wiring process.
