OK, I have decisions to make while I can (didn't buy the drivetrain yet). Hope to have real life support here from the members who know about registration in California, so thanks in advance.

Here is what I plan to do:
Cobra Replica kit with a Coyote Gen 2 or 3 engine.

What I know:
To get it registered in CA, it's gotta have SB100 and accepted as a 1965 (less tax, less insurance, no smog, and noise is no issue). Correct so far?

Now how is this even possible when this is actually a 2020 kit car and a 2018 engine?! I am still skeptical to really get this through, even when I've read a full outline of how to register it. I mean... that goes against any logic.

Who went through this with a set up like this or comparable? What are the hooks?

yep, i've read it. pretty helpful, and where my knowledge comes from... but it's from 2012. I am still wondering why they should give anyone a 1965 title and a sb100 when this is actually a 2020 car.

I would put it this way - you dont get a 65 title ... You get the smog requirements of a 65 vehicle.

Edit: they give sb100's because its the law. Otherwise there is no way in ..... That you could get an exemption!

got ya, even though it doesn't make sense (not a classic, kit, new), but i won't complain :)

OK, so what exactly is the phrase on the documents/tag which makes that possible (1965 body style)?
So what engine is in there is secondary as long the body has been accepted to be a 65?

"There are two ways to smog your car under SB100. One is by the year of the engine - which is fine if you have all
of your smog equipment on the car for the year of the engine - including all catalytic converters, etc. The other
way - the BEST way - is to smog the car according to the bodystyle. The Cobra is a 1965 bodystyle, and,
consequently, is smog exempt."

I registered my coyote equipped MK-IV in Nov of 2018 in Los Angeles, CA under SB-100 like the others. There is a difference between a DMV registration and the smog exemption. My DMV registration shows my model year as 2018. Model type as 1965 Cobra Rep.
My smog exemption certificate assigned by the State BAR referee lists my car model as a 1965 Cobra and under notes, it references my “Special Build” SB-100 assigned number.
Short answer is that the SB-100 process works and you can get a smog exempt MK-IV with a brand new motor. No CATs, PCV only.

Regarding noise, no guarantees. I don’t believe there is anything that protects us from a noise fix it ticket. Drive like an adult and you should be fine.

Even shorter answer, go for it. Build one.
