View Full Version : Header wrap on 302 headers

Seeing if I can pick your cumulative brains to see the length of header wrap I need for a 302 set of headers.
I estimate 20' per header but would like to hear from those who have done it.
While everything is apart I might as well...
Thanks,
John
Header wrap = corroded headers. And SS headers are not immune to this.
But if you just have to learn for yourself, be advised that the titanium wrap is the best I've found and the black wrap is the worst as it makes a mess and you'll be sorry. The wrap is friable (some worse than others) and makes a mess when installing it so wear proper PPE and soak the wrap in water before working with it.
But again, unless you have a very compelling reason to wrap you headers I suggest you reconsider. Once wrapped you are committed to keeping them wrapped.

Good point to make. Mine already show some corrosion, that's the reason I wanted to wrap them to "hide" the corrosion, and of course reduce under hood heat.

Hey John,
I wrapped both my roadster and coupe headers with the titanium wrap and I never had an issue but the coupe has yet to see the road. The product is easily removalable if needed. I looked back at my records and I bought 2" x 50 ft but had some left over. It really helps with heat in the roadster and I am hoping for similar results in the coupe.119542
Yep, you'll be wrapping them as long as you own them John. Go for the titanium wrap and remember to wear at least a dust mask when working with this stuff.

i have used the lava rock wrap few times now seems way better than the black stuff
i also sprayed with high temp clear after wrap seems to help but stinks and smokes
for a while while curing

Do you mean I’ll have to re-wrap at some point?
Thanks
Yes. You didn't think it lasts forever.

If you want “one and done” go with Jet Hot Ceramic Coating on your headers and your side pipes.
Reduces under hood temps!
Looks great forever!
Aircontroller, read post #2, then read #12. In most cases the cheap solution is not the best solution. But when it comes to header wrap, many times wrap is a very bad solution to a non existent problem.
But if you truly have a need, then go to Summit Racing and get DEI brand: https://www.summitracing.com/parts/dei-010127

So re coating with ceramic would be the best long term solution.
Anyone have an idea on cost?
Ceramic coating is expensive and more of a hassle but will give you the best overall results IF YOU NEED INSULATED HEADERS. There are many coaters out there, but here's a site that posts estimates for a variety of parts that will give you a ballpark idea of cost: https://boneheadperformance.com/ceramic-coating/automotive-ceramic-coating-prices/
If all you want to do is improve the looks of existing headers and the corrosion is not too bad, it would be more cost effective to have them sand blasted and paint them with high temp paint. That would cost less than wrapping them. Myself, I use VHT black. Works good, cheap & easy, and since I have to pull plugs and work around the headers after every run, the painted headers cool much quicker than SS, ceramic coated or insulated headers. The VHT has ceramic in the paint and are very durable once cured and are very easy to touch-up.

Jet Hot quoted $900 including return shipping for both headers and side pipes...
Considering what we spend on bodywork and paint, this seems reasonable.
Will be removing and send next week.

That sounds like a reasonable option.
John, the prices to sandblast your headers will likely be different from mine. But to give you an idea, the last two sets I built and had blasted where $20 a pair (the minimum charge for work). My powder coat guy does the blasting for me. Takes a couple of cans of VHT to get good coverage and that total cost will be less than buying more of the good quality wrap.
Good luck with it.

Thanks NAZ, I found a powder coater with great reviews near me so will call them too on Monday just to find out cost on just blasting and on recoating.

Just wrap em, I wrapped mine 8 years ago and theyre still fine. Guy that bought it from me appreciated the cooler footboxes. I used safety wire to secure the wrap instead of the expensive little metal zip ties that come with the kit.

You might look into -
https://www.zycoat.com/zybar-color-coats/
They were at SEMA with Hushmat
They said coat the pipes inside and out. If it actually stops 90% of the radiant heat as advertised, I think that would be impressive!!
