I was mocking up my throttle linkage and was taking the top and inside wall of my driver side footbox off and on several times. In the process, I couldn't help notice the extremely limited access available through the top access hole. What can actually be accomplished through this hole? Do others make this larger and fab a new cover? Do some make the entire top of the box removable?

Hi- When I built my MK3 I made the entire top panel removable.
I used nutserts and machine screws along the bottom. I put flat washers under the outer panel before riveting it on. Then I cut "fingers" in the inner panel to fit under the outer panel so it all slides together. I let a thin bead of silicone dry on the inside of the removable panel to act as a gasket or weather seal (maybe not necessary).
HTH?

Once you put the body on, you'll find that opening is about all that's clear of the body. No point in having the entire top removable. Once the body is on wouldn't be removable or provide very much additional access. The cover provides access to the top of the Wilwood pedal box to adjust brake bias, service the master cylinders, service the clutch quadrant (if not using hydraulic) and that's about it. Yes it's limited, and any work would be done along with access from the bottom. Just hope you don't have to do too much. Doesn't really compare to a Mk3. That footbox is larger. I've had both.
