After mistakenly giving away my original axles I was wondering if anyone has ordered complete new half-shafts from RockAuto or other box stores? My transmission came from a 2005 JDM Legacy GT b-spec but I mistakenly ordered Heavy Duty ones for a 2008 model. These have much larger diameter axles and are about 1 1/4" too long. I am now looking at the specs for RockAuto's 2005 models and the length seems just right.

Has anyone had any experience with the Suretrack/Trackmotive Heavy Duty Units (SB8047HD)? They do away with the the inner Tri-Pod joints in favor of a full 6-ball mount that provides greater articulation and better handling of right-to-left transmission movement during acceleration or just from wear. They have a much larger axle diameter extending out about 4" from the inner 6-ball CV joint before they taper down to the standard axle diameter. I'm guessing this is another splined area to provide the lateral movement lost to the 6-ball CV joint.

I am looking to order something that will bolt right up without having to exchange CV joints or use the factory axles that came with the kit.

Most people order from the Driveshaft Shop if they are looking for something able to handle more than stock power. I would imagine there are some crossover units that would work, but who knows what the part no’s are?

Thanks, Lance. I will be asking less than 350 wheel HP, so I figure at 2100 lbs gross wt., and no drop-clutch launches I should at least be in the realm of a bit of axle longevity. As I punch through the $40K barrier, I am becoming increasingly annoyed how expensive these engine\drivetrains can quickly become.

I also realize that I'm working with a front axle inner and a real axle outer CV joint, but with so many different years, designs, axle lengths, etc, I was hoping someone would have stumbled upon a stock configuration that would work.

I don't believe you will find a stock design that will fit a front transmission to rear hub. In our first year, we were doing a lot of auto-crosses with hard launches with wheel hop. We snapped 2 axles that summer. Factory five started carrying assembled half shafts. We a currently using them. No issues with FFR axles running street and track days and only a few hard launches. We are only at 195 WHP. A couple of weeks ago. Gunning it in 3rd gear our South Bend clutch started slipping. We will fix that this spring.

I agree with what Bob said. I've only heard of builders running into dead ends when trying to disassemble aftermarket axles (OEM replacement). You'll either have to use OEM axles, the built shafts from FFR or get custom from DSS (expensive).

I would press the "easy button" here since you are not planning on making insane power - get the pre-assembled rear axles and CV joints from FFR (~$100) and the front pieces from here (~$50 each): https://febestparts.com/OUTER_CV_JOINT_30X56X27/0810-028A44

It will cost you about $200, but everything will fit and you avoid the mess and frustration that many have had with non-OEM parts.

Thanks Kiwi Dave, but don't I want the front inner CV joints, axles and the Rear outer CV joints to match up with my rear outer hubs? Looking through my stuff, I realized I have everything I need to make up the front inners, except the boots and grease.

These look about right, but the description says 30 teeth (or splines) and my half shaft ends are 29-spline. It also doesn't say whether they are front or rear.

Hi

In that case you are all set for the front. You don't need the boots or grease - just the shaft and nut which hold the bearing casing and carrier together. The FFR rear axles are a good deal IMO.

Don't know if you are still looking... But I have a set of complete axles I bought from F5 that I never used.. $100 bucks for both + shipping

This is a sore subject for Destroyed all the original half shafts trying to get them separated........nen ordered new ones and was having issues getting those separated.wheni did, I began trying to put them on the supplied &F5 splined shafts only to see I had issues with spline counts.
At this point, I will be purchasing driveshaft shop units ans I have already waster 200 plus bucks on the new units only to have them not workout.

This was easiy one of the most frustrating parts of my build so far.

For those that read this in the future, I believe the link I gave is indeed for the front outer CV spline, the rears are quite different:

120502

Full disclosure though, I ended up using my donor front CV ends but the site indicates they should fit 2000 - 2007 Imprezas.

Cheers

Hey kcarlasc, I sent you a PM.
