I have a set of stainless exhaust for my build, but I like the look of the flat black side exhaust I have been seeing on others builds. What are you guys coating your side exhaust to make them black?

i used VHT rattle can.
Thank you. I was wondering if they needed to be ceramic coated/powder coated/or high temp rattle can.

You can have them ceramic coated black. Personally I would sell/trade someone here that has bare steel pipes and want stainless then have them ceramic coated. If you are going to rttle can paint them use Krylon black BBQ paint. I find it is more durable than than others.

I didn’t have great luck with the BBQ paint...it was OK until I put it on the track then the temperature of sustained high RPM caused it to cook off of the collectors. After that I had them ceramic coated satin black.

Two questions regarding that, I would like to hang on to my FFR side pipes to change out when I go to the track. But I’m not going to do it very soon, so it seems like a handy idea that I could use the HT rattle can to protect them.
Q1 is, will the paint be hard to remove if decide to ceramic coat later, or can ceramic coat be done over the paint?
Q2 is, do you remember what it cost to ceramic coat two side pipes?
Thanks, Bradley

They sandblast before ceramic coat, $250 plus or minus.

I'll be getting mine ceramic coated Black once it gets back from painting. It's obviously a very visible part of the finished product and IMO, rattle cans aren't the best alternative. Just be sure that you do your homework and get the right guy that does it for a living and not as a sideline to powder coating. They are two largely different processes. I have one guy in all of Orlando that Ceramic coating is all he does. Last time I was there, he told me why that was...He said "Because the work really sucks"...He's been there for 25 years, so it couldn't suck that bad, but you get my point.

Good advice. I remember reading about someone on the forum having trouble with the ceramic treatment on their headers.

Jet Hot is the only company I trust to coat a set of side pipes. That said, they AIN'T cheap.

I agree that Jet Hot is probably the best way to go. I got a quote from them a year or so ago to do my raw FFR pipes and it was around $500 plus shipping both ways.

I had a set of stainless pipes coated, no problem. I have a set(Steel) I just had ceramic coated black as well and have a another set at the coater which will be black.
They do Sandblast before coating.
I pay $375 for black or shiny silver.
the guy who does them is HTC coatings in Rockland,MA also know as Disc Brakes are us.
He has probably done a dozen sets for me.

I called Jet Hot and got a quote to coat my headers shiny silver, My headers are painted with the VHT primer and paint. I was told no problem and they would blast them inside and out for $400.00. I'm in Va. and they are in Greensboro, NC. I may just drive down rather than ship them since I don't have the original box any more.

I get my BBQ paint at HD. Maybe once a year I shoot the underside front of the pipes right where they exit the body and make that 90 deg turn. That gets blasted by normal road stuff and removes the paint. Maybe every other time I shoot the whole side pipe so it is evenly black and even then it is maybe a 20minute job. Ceramic coating is certainly nice but several hundreds vs <$10? I made my choice 14 years ago.

I couldn't find anybody within 150miles of me to ceramic coat my headers so I just bought ceramic coated headers. So, for my side pipes I will rattle can them and see how it goes.

+1 with this. I'm only 2 years in, and 5k+ miles.. but.. a simple touchup on those corners early this year has done the trick so far.

Did the BBQ paint thing, but when my pipes were blown out, I built a SS set and had them coated black and never looked back! 20k on those pipes and still look brand new!
