Hi Group,
I installed my fuel tank yesterday on my MKIV - had a few problems.
The passenger side strap and bolt. There is no way the bolt supplied was long enough - I used a longer one - but it is not completely vertical it is angled....probably not a big deal.
The filler tube is against the angel bar on the frame and is being pushed downard.
Any Thoughts?
Thanks!

Change the bolts to Stainless now. The FFR black ready to rust bolts are not worth keeping. Look to see if the tank is centered as best you can and if its hitting the stops. My filler tube barely clears the frame and I had to clearence the sheetmetal when it was installed. The filler tube gasket can leak (did on mine) you need the tube to be in the correct postion so it won't cause a leak. I ended up buying a new tube to filler tube seal after the first new one didn't do well. So far the second seems ok. When you look at the way the filler tube is supposed to seal its a suprise that it works at all. You may want to wait until you install the filler tube later in the build before putting the seal in place. Tape the tank shut for now. I think the tube swinging it the gasket tied off waiting for the body may have helped mine to be a leak.

PJ, I have the same problem on my IV, I had to heat and flatten the fill tube where it would hit the 3/4" frame, making sure that the section that enters the tank was un disturbed, It sits straight now and doesnt touch. Dont know if it will be a problem, I'm still building and have only go carted with not leaks. I already put a new gasket in the tank.

How did you heat it?
I have a few good suggestions from the site and ffcars. 3kcarbon is asking if my tank is centered - good thought - I will check that as being of a 1/2 inch could cause the problem. Other suggestions have been - to add a spacer under the 4 plastic pads in the frame - I will look at that too. Dropping a 1/4 to 3/8's may help too.
Thanks!
I had the same issue and ended up lowering the tank by about 1/2".

I obviouly took the tube off and made sure there wasnt any residual gas in it then put it in a vise and heated the area that needed to be lower. Once red i tapped a flat with a hammer. This didnt disturbe the area that enters the tank seal. If i get time tomorrow ill take it off and shoot you a pic.

Thanks! I just realized you are in Middle River - I am in Freeland just up 83.
I know this is an old post, but I just ran into this problem tonight. Once I flattened the tank lip in the area where the square frame posts touch the tank I had just enough room to get the strap bolted on. A few taps with the rubber hammer and the filler neck barely clears the frame. I think I am going to flatten the filler tube a bit just for some extra clearance. Bolts a little longer would have made the job a lot easier.
My filler neck bracket was a mirror image of the one in the build manual and had to be mounted opposite from the photo in the manual.

I just went and checked mine. I am hitting the frame as well.. Does everyone think I should take action on this or leave it where it is?

emac and SirAustin - what I did to solve it was I drilled a small hole in the 4 square plastic bumpers that we put in the frame. The I attached a small chair leg pad (the type you get from H-D or Lowes ) and used small fender washers between the square pad and the new chair pad - held them in place with permatex or anything sticky - this effectively dropped me tank down about 3/8 - 1/2 inch. The neck do not touch the frame anymore.

My bracket is opposite too.. their metal fab guy must have bent them backwards. I brought mine to work and I'm going to flatten and rebend.

After thinking about it I have both issues going on. My brackets are barely long enough to get a bolt threw, and my filler neck is hitting the frame. I will probably have to get longer bolts and also add spacers.
